The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Kristina vs. Mai

Our best debate yet!  I want to congratulate these two young ladies for coming to the podium ready to debate.  Both students had speeches and were flowing.  Kristina was able to crack through Mai's armor with the treatment of the enslaved in the fields.  Mai was unresponsive to this question.  Mai on the other hand was able to get Kristina to define  equality which Mai took advantage of during the CX.  Rebuttals were better but if Kristina would have continued to flow during Mai's speech she would have remembered to attack Mai's untouched backbone of the economy argument.  Congratulations to both debaters for raising the level of debate.

Hint: if all were created equal, can the abolishment side really prove that beyond Thomas Jefferson's writings who also spoke about the inferiority of Africans, that African Americans are equal to everyone else?

  1. I think Kristina is right because all men are equal. We are the same; we do same job. The slaves do hard work and they treated bad away. Mai said we are not equal. We can do same job, but we are not equal.

  2. I think Mai's opening argument was stronger than Kristina's opening argument, but Kristina's argument was strong too, Mai won the debate because she had more evidence than Kristina, even Mai did not did well on the CX, and she agree with Kristina's argument. Kristina's rebuttal was strong, but it's too short. I'd like to congratulate both debaters, and they both did really great today.

  3. I think Kristina's opening talk was stronger than Mai did.Eventhough Mai was won,it just because she has more doucument than Kristina has.I am always stand in against slavery side, slavery trade are wrong.

  4. This was probably an outstanding debate. I'm very proud of my two close friends, especially Mai, who is very new to this. I would like to say both sides had good arguments. Kristina, though i would never have though about it, created an argument called 'Education For All.' I was really shocked to hear this, because not only am i against slavery, but i surely agree with it. I believe Kristina would've done better in her speech and CX, but all in all it was good. Mai was amazingly organized, and it showed. I think the judges rule for Mai to win is a good choice, because she deserved it.

  5. this was in my opinion the best debate so far. both sides presented a good amount of documents for their opening statement. Mai i wish you followed through in your cross examination because you had good questions but it seemed like once you got the answer u wanted you moved on you could've made it more obvious that the point was obsolete. Kristina you had a really good cross examination and i like how you incorporated your character, Fredrick Douglas into your argument, as well as using some of your characters documents.i believe that in the end Mai won but it was a very close debate and i want to say congrats to both of you on a great debate:D -mike young

  6. i am very proud of two of my closest friends, it was a very close debate. i like how Kristina stayed in character, and had the little attitude going, the attitude was not at all disrespectful, it was just right for this kind of debate. Kristina was creative with making up a new argument "education for all", because it was new, i think Mai didn't really know how to crack her argument. But Kristina got Mai with the inhumane treatment saying that the slaves were dying of heat conditions, but that was easy to get around, Mai could have said we can't control the weather , and she could've given evidence that the slaves were given clothing that would make them less hot while they were working, and also that in some cases workers do die. I don't think Kristina used her four minutes for writing the rebuttal too well, but her rebuttal was strong, saying that if we have uneducated people, how can the economy move forward. The cross examination was good, however it could have been better if both debaters didn't let the others slide. Now Mai, in the CX, said do you think the slaves would have been able to read and write without being enslaved, and Kristina said yes, then Mai said well, did the Africans know how to read and write back in Africa the same way us Americans do. and Kristina said no, but hen said she wouldn't know cause her mother was taken from Africa? Mai could have said well then, how can you say that your on the same level if we had to teach y'all had to read and write? , Mai could have kept prying at basically making the argument look weak by proving that African Americans are inferior, with her questions. What i liked about Mai is that she had confidence going up there, and took the advantage and braveness of going first. I think her arguments were supported by lots of evidence and she made sure she went into detail as to what her point was trying to be made. she messed up in the CX asking Krissy to define equality, which was a wrong definition, but being as though Mai didn't call her on that, and because of the fact Mai said equality can't be defined, i think she suffered from that. Another thing Mai did good was saying was that when Kristina said equality is living without laws, and Mai said ,well so you believe we should live in a world without laws, Kristina contradicted herself by saying , well yeah, to a certain extent , so i think that's where Mai had her. As far as Mai's rebuttal, she could have addressed Kristina's equality definition, but instead she said again that there's no definition to equality, whereas she should have said, there cannot be equality. another thing is that Mai agreed with Kristina about the inhumane treatment, which is what you don't want to do with your opponent. One thing Mai stressed throughout her Debate was that There will never be equality. But the reason why Mai won is because Kristina came off unprepared in her rebuttal not using her time wisely, even though it was strong. Mai won because of her evidence, her confidence, and organization. I think this is the best debate so far, i am really proud of both of them, and cannot wait to judge more of the classes debates :D GOOD Job , And Oh Yeah, GO "FOR SLAVERY" ! YEAHH LOL

  8. I realy enjoyed the debate. I liked how kristina used an education argument. That was new. I liked how mai stayed consistent with her opion that equality doesn't exsist in this world because so many people have their opinons. Over all, i really enjoyed the debate. Congradulations Kristina & Mai!!

  10. Kristana and Mai did a WONDERFUL job on there debate. I think Kristana did a great job in here rebutals , but Mai also did good in the opening speech , and the CX. This was the best debate so far. Kritana and Mai Congats to both of yall!

  11. Kristina's opening argument needed a little more detail. But the rebuttal was great;evidence was supportive and you repeated your theme a lot so we could get the point. One thing you nneeded to work o is useing your time wisely. You could have used some things against Mai such as the fact that she agreed that slaves die during the middle passage because of heat and lack of food. Mai you had a very good opening argument and cx they were very detailed and involved a lot of evidence. On the cx you could have challenged Kristina by continuing to beat your questions asked with a hose. Both did a very good job and congrats.

  12. That was a red hot debate from start to finish from the strong opener to short yet powerful rebuttal. The best part of the debate which I talked with a friend about was when(so far no said this but me so correct me if i'm wrong) Mai asked the question about laws. Kristina said(this is the correct me if i'm wrong part) No we need laws, but blacks want the same laws as whites(more or less what she said). I believe that was the moment Mai win because Kristina unknowingly agree that whites are better then blacks, because if whites have something blacks want then white people must be better then black people. In my opinion that won the debate for Mai. Also the only thing that I truthfully don't like about the debate was Mai supersonic fast speaking and how she only and I mean this only tap the surface of her questions used in the CX. Sorry but it the truth and the truth always in one way or another hurts :P

  13. Though I was not in class, i heard that the debate was excellent. Kristina, from what i understand , your opening statement was very strong and you weakened one of Mai's main points, but failed to rebutt against her backbone of the economy argument. To MAi, from what i hear, you did such and excellent job because you were amazingly prepared with tons of evidence and a speech. I bet that the both of you did an excellent job and this was a superb debate.

  14. I thought the debate was great. Mai had good examples but she should speak a little slower. On the other hand Kristina did good by getting Mai to agree with inhumane treatment.

  15. Kristina and Mai's debate is the most outstanding debate so far. Both sides had excellent speeches, Mai really surprised with the confidence that she had stating her arguments and with the rebuttal. Kristina also had a splendid and strong speech, even though she didn't take advantage of her time she still had good valid points. I believe this is the most impressive debate so far!

  16. I like Mai's argement, because she's argument have lot of evidence to support the argement, and help me find a lot informations.....

  17. Mai had a strong opening argument and kristina as well, but mai had more evidence than kristina, thats what made her win the debate. i like how kristina used the education argument and her rebuttal was very strong, she even made mai to agree with the inhumane treatment. and i also liked how mai made kristina to agree with her, when kristina said: black people need law as white people, that means white people are better than blacks. both of you did a great job, it was a really hard to decide who won the debate.
.(mai you need to speak slower).

  18. This was the best so far to be presented!!! Good job, and congratulations ladies!!! You have both set the bar high to be reached. Both ladies came well prepared with speeches and evidence to support thier arguments. Mai's opening arguments were very good. The arguments were welly put together, supportive with evidence, and organized. Kristina's opening arguments were allso well. She had three main points providing evidence as well. She used an very unkown argument saying that since 1/3 of the population were blacks, then 1/3 of the populaiton were uneducated. Both CX's were very well, with good questions asked, and even better answers. Mai tlaked equality, and the law in response to Kristina's CX. Kristina pointed out that blacks treated cruely and inhumane. Kristina won the rebuttal. She did so because, of using the "inhumane treatment" argument and just wrong for slavery to be allowed PERIOD. Mai mainly focused on that there is no true definition ot equality. One thing that Mai could work on was touching back to reference to the "backbone of economy" argument. Kristina could have tied in the 8th Amendment into the "cruel and inhumane treatment" to make it stronger giving more laws that could have been broken or gave even more precise numbers when using population(to be specific Virginia). Kristina incorporated her caracter into her speech well. In my mind, I beleive that Kristina won the debate. But congartulations and a very good job well done to Mai. More evidence the better!!!!

  19. By far the BEST debate yet! Mai and Kristina both came to the table ready, and confident. I love Kristina's Education Arguemnet, and how during her CX she got Mai to admit slavery was cruel to a degree. Mai however had one withstanding argument that kept her from losing the debate. It was a tie for a long time. I am sooo looking foward to the next debates!

  20. This in my opinion was the best debate yet ! Both with there organization an confidence on there sides. I enjoyed kristina's rebutal and mai's opening statement and felt that they both should have one this debate.

  21. both debates was good. They both used a lot of evidence to support their reasons. I like how Kristina used her person and gave information about his background and their confidence through out the whole debate. For those reasons i think that this debate should of been a tie.

  23. Both debates were very strong from both sides. Both debaters were very organized and prepared to debate. Kristina used a strong debate on education for all, and finished with a strong rebuttal. Mai had strong arguments commonly used but she went as far as she could with evidenceand finished with a strong rebuttal. Congrats to both debaters.
