The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Taniy-ia vs. Michael

What a fantastic debate this was! Both speakers came over prepared and it showed.  Taniy-ia offered the class new arguments such as slaves are unable to prosper.  She did bring up the idea that slavery prohibited African Americans from being educated but should we not also know why that matters?  Taniy-ia's strength was in her CX and appropriately challenged the contradiction of being George Washington but violating the laws.  Is this true I wonder?  Mike brilliantly argued that there is a clear distinction between class and race therefore placing slaves as a lower class, not necessarily the race.  This argument sealed the deal in the judges eyes.  Congratulations to both debaters, the level has been raised even higher!

  1. I think Taniya is right, they want a good education. They are scared that if we teach the slaves they will have more power. Slave Masters don't want them to be educated. They treated them in a bad way. Mike said that they were not treated in a bad way. When they are sick they can rest (page 40 Mudsilltheory).

  2. Clash of the Titants? Possibly the best debate were going to see this year. Both Mike n Taniyia brang solid evidence to the podium, although I felt Mikes' logic was more adjecent to mine. Niyia kept bringing her being a black woman into the debate, but Mike easily swept her hardship stories away in the CXs and rebutal stating africans are inferrior because we took them.. also the difference between social classes n race gave him the sure victory.

  3. It was a nice debate, they both did a great job.taniyia need to be a little organized
because it was random, she was speaking a little faster, but it was great though, and your rebuttal was short, but its strong. mike had a lot of evidence in his argument, but your rebuttal is confusing.
    (nice)

  5. I like it was a great debate, they both have a lot of evidence, but Ta-Niyia was speak little fast, so I can't hear her all the argument. And I was confusing what's Mike talking about in his rebuttal. I like Ta-Niyia's CX it was strong. Congratulations to both debaters.

  7. Mike did something I haven't seen before - he went in detail about the social classes. "In a sense, we have the same organs, but not the same social class" and he went on to explain why.. that it was not based on color, rather in a sense natural selection. To me, honestly, that's what won the debate. Taniya's abolitionist argument was amazing; one of the best I have ever heard. Even though she spoke quickly, I got all of her points. She definitely won the education argument and I loved when she boxed Mike in during the CX about him being contradictory. Overall, this was a hard debate to judge but congratulations to Mike on your win.. I'd like to see both of you debate again sometime ;)

  8. Possibly one of the best debates we are going to see this year. Taniya did a great job supporting the against slavery side, she stayed her evidence and stood her ground. Mike also did a fantastic job for the for slavery side, he was able to twist the " we are all equal" argument so that it supported his side. This was an amazing debate!

  9. it was a great debate this was an example of what you should do for a debate. taniyia could have spoke a little slower but otherwise both debaters supported solid evidence . . . .

  10. this was alot harder then i thought it would be. my opponent was very well prepaired and that is one of the most important things in the deabate. She knew her arguments and how to back them up. I think anyone on the abolitionist side would be smart to incorporate some of her strategies and documents into yours. I thought i handled myself in an alight fashion, definalty not to the best of my abilities. i had alot of things left to say but they were in question for and i didnt include them in my rebuddle which would've helped me alot.-mike young

  11. to me, this was one of the best debates so far. I liked that ta-niya stated her arguments well but wish she would have slowed down in her speech. She did a good job. Mike did a good job too. I realy liked how he twist the "we are all equal" argument in a way noone else did before. he explained that yes we all have the same organs and all but everone is classified in a different class. I realy enjoyed the debate. Congradulations, Mike && Ta-Niya!!

  13. I think that both Ta-niyia and Mike did a good job. I like how Ta-niyia used a lot of evidence to back up her arguements i just wished that she could of slowed down a little. I also liked how Mike said that everybody has a different class so everybody isnt equal in every way

  14. "It's power level is over 9000!" That was how great this debate was everything from the opener to the rebuttal was excellent the only wrong was the way both debaters talk.Mike he just kept choking up his word or had a long pause when in the middle of a sentence because he was liking for evidence from the packet. Ta-niya was speaking a supersonic(the hedgehog) speed and I was barely able to write down the main parts of her speech(I got one maybe two if I was lucky). That all I have to say and remember that the truth always in someway hates

  15. This was possibly one of the best debates so far this year! I would like to see Kenny and Mike go at it.;)Furthermore, this was an excellent debate. Mike brought up an argument I had never heard about slaves and other people all looking the same, but they aren't as worthy because they are slaves, and there always needs to be social classes in life. This is at the same time, not true and not fair because, even though there are social classes, why can't everyone have a chance to 'get to the top'.Slavery is a very controversial issue and I'm starting to think there is no answer to whether it is right or not. Slavery was beneficial and damaging to not only America, but the whole world and how we look at today. THings in history happen for a reason, not just to be called 'history'.

  16. I believe that it should have been a tie because I took over in the CX'S, but Mike did beat me in the rebuttal. I wish the judges would have pointed out the fact that Mike used the word racial. I am proud of both of us and hopefully I can redeem myself in Ta-Niyia vs Sierra.

  17. This was the best debate in my eyes! I loved how TaNiyia contradict Mike about his own rules because he was the president of the United States. Also, i really love how TaNiyia was super organized and knows her arguments well, Mike on the other hand did also a good job, but it felt like he needs a little bit more preparation. but good job guys! you did weell
