The Great Slavery Debate
Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Jackie v. Elbert
Wow, what a debate! Both speakers had well researched speeches and knew their material well. Elbert's backbone of the economy argument was convincing and included a connection to the transatlantic economy. Kudos! Jackie's revolutionary war and inhumane treatment arguments were incredible. This debate was really close and only because Jackie was able to counter that children did work, thus defusing Elbert's better off as slaves argument a bit. In the end, both speakers were respectful and modeled to the rest of the audience what it takes to win. Congratulations to both speakers!

ReplyDeleteI thought that todays debate with jackie and elberts debate went extremely well for the first people to go. I thought that both debaters had really strong arguements jackie more then elbert. Jackie had more information and supproted every bit of her debate which made everything stronger. Elbert had good arguments but i felt as though he didnt support them well enough. I thought that when Jackie brought up the revolutionary war, that made her. That is a very hard topic to come by and i think she did it very well. CONGRATS!!!!!
I THINK THIS DEBATE WAS VERY INTERESTING. BOTH ELBERT AND JACKIE HAD STRONG ARGUMENTS, BUT JACKIE HAD MORE EVIDENCE. ELBERT'S ECONOMICS ARGUMENT WAS REALLY GOOD AND HE USED THE GRAPHS ACCURATELY. OVERALL, JACKIE WON THIS DEBATE BECAUSE OF HER KNOWLEDGE ON HER SUBJECT. IMYAH SOMMERVILLE
ReplyDeletei think that this was a great argument and albert and jackie had great evidence and points but jackie had a lot more evidence then elbert.elberts had great questions and a good argument but i think jackie won this debated because she had a lot more comebacks and evidence for her debate.
ReplyDelete!barbara carlson.
jackie showed great evidence and i didnt think that that was in the packet becasue i didnt hear them. it showed that she did her work. Elbert showed numbers that i didnt understand and he used them in a good way.
ReplyDeletemy name is spelled Elbert "E" from Elbert
ReplyDeleteThis debate was very interesting and prepared me for what i was getting into sorta kind of. This debate was very persuasive in many ways. Jackie took control of the debate with her strong arguments and cx time and speech.
ReplyDeleteThe very first debate in period 3. it was an amazing debate. jackie talked very fast. I wouldn't blame her, she has only 5 minutes, but she gave great points. Elbert was great too. he great questions like "What is life, liberty, pursuit of happiness?" I think jackie won this debate because she used and controlled her "anger" in the debate as a weapon. But, nice job to both of you!!
