The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Marcus v. Khadijah

Opening speeches should be awesome. This two have lots of abilities and would love to see them debate again. Marcus attempted to nail the religious argument while Khadijah nailed the economy argument. Khadijah would have put the nail on the coffin if she described what is was like to be free. Perhaps also debaters would be interested in discussing the differences in color skin and hair (polygenism arguments). There is evidence in the Richard Wells document to counter it!

  1. i think Khadijah won because she was well prepared and her open speech was good. She had good arguments. i believe marcus was trouble with his argument and didn't give enough evidence.

  2. I think Khadijah won for a ggod reason because her opening argument was very strong and very engadeing. Marcus's opening argument was good but it was kind of confusing. Marcus"s rebuttel was a tad bitt stronger than khadijah's was, but she tackeld all of her arguments and had evidence for each one. I think khadijah should have asked more questions, but over all she ROCKED her debate

  3. The debate between Marcus and Khadijah was very interesting.while seeing Marcus debate it seems to me that his strongest arguement was the Christianity arguement. He nailed that one arguement but he only stated evidence from the bible. And also he had many other arguements but he didnt touch them. As far as though Khadijh shes a strong debater. I think her strongest arguemeny was Slave are the Backbone of the economy. She cited alot of evidence and was also drefensive and a good way and bad at times. My advice to both debaters is have good sportsmanship and also pusture, because both of you lacked in that area. Congrats Khadijah. And good job to both Debaters.

  4. I feel that Khadijah won without a doubt. Marcus did good, but Khadijah did better. Marcus spoke slower and louder, but that didn't scare Khadijah. Marcus had the making of good contentions but never finished them up. That is the main reason i think Khadijah won.

  5. I belivie Khadijah won. Reason being that edivence could be given and was spoken more clear. Marcus did good but began to lose many students on the rebuttal. The rebuttal was everywhere, everywhere but attacking Khadijah's questions. Both did a great job, but Khadijah's agruments was much stronger.

  6. I think it was a close battle to the end because one, both Marcus and Khadijah both said great arguments. Two their cross examination of each other wasn't the best, because one asked the other one question. Three the rebuttals are the best way to come back after being counted out in the beginning which I think Khadijah uses more powerfully. So Khadijah won in my records books. Also Awesome job for them two speakers who were the 3rd group of kids to debate for Mr. Brasof 2nd period class.

  7. this was a good debate were marcus and khadijah went at it for the win. khadijah was aruments were precise and strong will marcus had good ideas but no evidence. if he had used more evidence it could have been a harder debate to judge. but in the end khadijah won. good job kahnijah. i agree with the judges decicion and critic.

  8. In my opinion Khadijah really deserved to win. Marcus was ok but Khadijah did better. I could understand what Khadijah, but with Marcus i was a little loss. His arguments wasn't that clear to me, and his arguments didn't keep me interested, but Khadijah's did. I liked how Khadijah asked how are we all equal when we have diffferent fathers. Congradulation to both speakers.
