The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Stephanie vs. Sarah P

In the first debate of the day for 3rd period, Stephanie took on Sarah in a match that pitted Martha Washington vs James Forten. Stephanie started off with a strong opening, using two arguments as the crux of her statement. She effectively used the slave population and Abraham Lincoln documents to her advantage. Sarah fired back in her opening statement, using her character's background and the price of rice and slaves. In the cross examinations, Stephanie effectively caught Sarah in a contradiction which weakened her argument. She asked Sarah that if being a slave was so good, why would you free them? Sarah did not know how to respond and things started to look grim. However, during the rebuttals, both competitors each effectively pointed out the weaknesses in each others arguments. Some chinks were placed in the armor of the two debaters, but in the end, Stephanies two strong arguments, effective cross examination, and her use of the documents let her stand strong and take the victory. Congrats to both debaters!

  1. 4/29/09 my class had a debate. The first pair of debaters were Janicee and George playing the roles as Elizabeth Freeman and Charles Pickney. The strongest argument in my opinion is when Janice (Elizabeth Freeman argued that slaves in America are treated as chattel instead of an occupation. i my self had that same argument I was able to learn how to critic mines. She provided alot of evidence in her arguments that helped her in the long run. George was so passionate in his argument, I clearly understood what he was talking about. Another pair of debaters were Kaliea and Nick playing the roles as Crispus Attucks and George washington. During their debate I was thinking to my self wow. They have some powerful arguments. Kaliea (Crispus Attucks) had more than the information needed for debate but on the other had i felt as though that Nick made a more stronger argument because he believed in what he was saying. Overall, the debaters did an excellent job presenting their arguments!!!

  2. 4/30/09 My second period class had another amazing debate The first pair of debaters were Marcus and Khadjia playing the roles of James Forten and Martha Washington. These debaters had powerful speeches. They believed in what they were saying and provided the class with two amazing arguments.Martha Washington made a good argument on why slavery shouldn't be abolished because African Americans are the back bone of the economy. She gave evidence involving numbers and the products slaves made. Marcus had a powerful argument as well but didn't use enough information to support his argument. Overall, both debaters had powerful arguments.

  3. 4/30/09, today I also went up to deabte. I must say that I was astounded that I had to present but I would say that I was prepared for anything that came my way. I went up against Briana and she did a good job but in my opinion I could have won if I did more research on my person and hers. We both did good in our arguments stating why or why not slavery should be abolished. Overall we were both good. She could have asked me more questions during the cross examination instead of stating why my person (James Madison) had slaves. And I thought I could have done better with arguing her statement about my person.

  4. i think this debate was fun to watch. stephanie had strong arguments and good evidence, but she was talking a little fast. sarah's chosen character helped her throughout the debate because she showed strength in her arguments. i think stephanie won because of her use of the documents.

  6. this was a good debate between me and sarah. I thought that she was going to come back hard at me. When i saw her flowing i thought she had many questions and that i wasnt going to be able to answer back. Since i was practicing i knew how to answer back. I think i really got her when i asked about her husband will and that she let those slaves go. After all it was agood match and i want to debate again.

  8. sadly i didnt see this debate but through the grape vine i heard it was fun to watch, and went to a level where people didnt get bored. Stephanie had good evidence and good support of it, her opening speech was hard hitting. Sarah was good as well, but i think she was a little behind by a point or two but still did pretty good. congrats guys!
