The Great Slavery Debate
Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Chelsea v. Cabreca
An amazing debate. Chelsea delivered a stinging attack on slavery with strong reasoning and evidence. It better speech might not have been written. However, Cabreca systematically was able to break Chelsea's armor with the contention that slaves are property and are taught by slave masters. Kudos Cabreca; not an easy thing to do. Congratulations to both speakers. The high level of expectations has been maintained.

I think both debaters had strong arguments but when Chelsea was cross examined Caprecca, she held her ground when being questioned. And also when Caprecca was cross examining Chelsea, she seemed to fall under pressure. I especially liked when Caprecca made it a point that Chelsea wouldn't have been able to read or write if it wasn't for her slave masters teaching her how to read!
ReplyDeleteThe Cabrecca and Chelsea debate was amazing I enjoy Chelsea speech and i like how she kept on talking about the great things her person archive. but I think she held back during the cross examination she didn't have evidence to prove that slaves are not property and she allow Cabrecca attack her on that. I like how Cabrecca defended that her slaves were well taken care of and how she taught her slaves how to do new things. overall they both did amazing. and the winner chose was the fair choice
ReplyDeleteAmazing Debates end speechless!!!!This debate was just that. Chelsea and Cabreeca articulated both arguments so well that the judges couldnt barely decide who to pick. I believe that this was a fair choice because Cabreeca stated all of her information brilliantly! I believe that this debate showed all of us how we should be debating!!!The strongest argument for me was Cabreeca's argment on SLAVES BEING HER PRODUCT AND THAT MEANS THAT SHE COULD DO ANYTHING SHE PLEASED WITH THEM. Wat an argment!!Overall this debate was excellent!!!
ReplyDeletewell i want to thank everybody for all the suggestions that i could of made during the debate. I think that they would of helped me out alot. Congratulations Cabrecca you did very well.
ReplyDeleteWOW!!!! I was so amazed. I thought that chelsea was going to win.... but its all good..lol..chelsea you could of done better in the cx, and in the rebuttal.. and cabreca i wanted to congratulate that you had won
ReplyDeleteI say that Chelsea's nd Cabrecca's debate was good.. Chelsea had some very ood arguments, but some of her arguments she was kinda suck at but if she was to deliver more information, or not have let Cabreeca tgake more control then she woul;d have had it. I think Cabreeca was organized and she had all her points and evidence lined up to go, but i think she kinds took to much control but then she caught her self nd stopped so that was a good thing. To me the debates were a tie, i am glad i wasn't a judge because I wouldn't know who to pick. But congrats Cabreeca.
ReplyDelete(EXCELLENT DEBATES)
Also, I think both of the rebuttal's could have been better.. And the CX, some questions were asked that couldn't be answered.
ReplyDeleteThis was an outstanding debate as well! Like Mierra stated, I like when Cabrecca said how would whoever Chels person name is would be able to read or write if it wasnt for the slave-owners. As well, I liked the way Chels asked why would she be against abolishment if her sister were partially black and was raped by her slave-owner? But,so far so good. Can't wait to see tomorrow debates! Congratulations to you both!

ReplyDeleteI think this was a great debate Chelsea who knew so much about her person was able to get her point across she handled the cx very well most people would have cracked under the pressure so congrats to Chelsea for keeping her cool and congrats to Cabreca for winning
ReplyDeleteI thought both of them did good. I feel as though Chelsea should have attacked her more on that slaves aren't just a property. In fact she could have pushed it more when Cabrecca answered to Chelsea's question on " Is human a property" and she answered "yes". Chelsea could have pushed that more and said " That means she's a property".
ReplyDeleteI think Chelsea should have won and she would have if one of the judges didn't change their vote. But both of them did really good.
ReplyDeletethis was also a good debate. i think that the outcome was fair because cabrreca used chelsea person to her adavantage. i'm proud of chelsea though because she came forth and spoke well and did her best
ReplyDeleteLabriah vs. Jeff
ReplyDeleteThis was my favorite debate of all! This was such a close call. Jeff began the debate with a new style. He overpowered the crowd with his intrduction piece. But towards the end, he was stuck. He tried to use the fact that Labriah, being Phyllis Wheatly, was a Poet. He claimed that Slavery should be abolished because slaves couldn't make a life for themselves. Phyllis Wheatley became a poet, so doesn't that prove the fact that slaves are just as capable as whites? I loved how Labriah used one of the 10 commandments, " Thou shall not steal, Thou shall not Kill". In my opinion her arguments were really organized and proved why slavery should be abolished.

Khadijah vs. Marcus
ReplyDeleteThis debate was a debate that I dreaded ever being apart of. What I mean by this is the fact that Marcus kind of got himself in a whole by not having solid evidence and emotion. On the other hand, Khadijah stole the show with her un-equality argument. She said how we all are created by god, but all come out different. For instance, 1 can come out with 1 leg or a disease. This proves were no equal.
The great Slavery Debate, Genise vs. George
ReplyDeleteBeing that this was the first debate, I feel both opponents handled themselves well. The argument I liked best was the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness argument. Genise supported this famous quote of the Decleration by saying, that the quote symbolizes the slaves rights to choose. In my opinion Genise won the debate, although George had some really good arguments. However, George didn't provide enough evidence which threw him under the bus.
Erica vs. Chanell. During this debate, I felt Chanell did really well during her flowing. She did really well with the eye contact and projecting her voice. The emotion you use makes the debate, and I felt she covered that really well. Erica had a solid opening argument but I felt she could have handled her cross examination
ReplyDeletea little better. Chanell used the fact that James Hammond raped his nieces. That had nothing to do with her points but Erica couldn't defend herself well enough which led to her loss.
Chelsea vs. Cabrecca. Both had very good arguments, but Cabrecca was a little more aggressive. I like how Cabrecca proved how slaves are property. Good job to both of them.
ReplyDeleteThis debate shocked me because of how they kept there gard up. Good Job
ReplyDeleteBoth of you did i good job n i give you your props on that but i was shocked when cabrecca won. Both of you had good evidence but i disagreed with what the judges were saying but both CX were ok and u both attacked each other.
ReplyDeleteThanks to everyone who commented. I really appriciate it. And for all the negative comments I somewhat thank you too
ReplyDeleteCabrecca Perry
Both debaters had alot of strong points and made good arguments. I fully enjoyed this debate
ReplyDeleteI WAS NOT HERE FOR THIS DEBATE BUT CONGRADULATIONS CABRECCA!!!!
