The Great Slavery Debate
Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Barbara v. Steven F.
What a fun debate. Steven has been one of the first students to challenge the authority of a document. That is, who was James Hammond (Mudsill Theory, etc...) and is he lying? Impressive Steve, impressive. Barbara did a great job projecting her voice and speaking plainly to the audience. In the end, Barbara did not respond the fact that slaves were rebelling due to inhumane treatment. Kudos to both speakers.

they both did a great job... steven did a great job...good evidence and great arguments....now barbara she did a great job with the questions and he arguments were great.. ill give steven a 8/10 and barbara a 6/10 but they were both great
ReplyDeleteI wast there for their debate but from what i have heard and read, it seems to be that both debaters did a very good job. Barbra had good arguments but was said to not have backed them up clearely or enough. Steven on the other hand i heard did awesome because he killed her when she was week and dived into the debate. CONGRADS TO BOTH OF YOU !
ReplyDeleteAlthough i wasn't here in class to watch this debate, but i heard many good things about this debate. Steven challenged a document and i think thats hard to do. On the other hand Barb had a good speech written even though she wasn't here for some days.
ReplyDeleteYes steven had won but there are reasons behide that one i couldnotreally understand him but from what i did hear he had a really great pointsss, and congradss steven =/
ReplyDeleteThis was a great debate! I think both of them did a good job. They were not completely organized though. Barbara's speech was not necessarily what it should have been I think she could have done better, and she could have presented her arguments better. What I did like about Barbara was that she projected her voice very well. Steven's speech was not well organized but it was good. He also projected his voice well and his personality is what made this debate so interesting. During cross examination was the best part because when Steven challenged the authority of a document which made Barbara fall completely apart. Kudos to both speakers though :)
ReplyDeletebarb, you had a good argument, but you struggled in the cx. but also came back in the rebuttal, you had a good point in the rebelling. it was also good when you caught steven in that struggle, when you asked him how did he know the food was bad and he was very stuck he had no idea what to say or how to back his evidence.
ReplyDeleteSteven you had good arguments. good cx.
Great Job!
I loved the debate..i just think it's so funny to see steven up there thinking he's all that...lol but, he had very good points and alot of evidence he also got her stuck in the cx....but still good......congrads both of yall~!
ReplyDeleteOut of all the debates, this was one of the most funniest. Barbara and steve were neck n.neck. When steve asked babara about james henry a slave, iknew it was over. But barbara still stood tall on her rebuttal. great job to bboth of you!!
