The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Elicia v. Jasmine W.

Elicia used logic as a way to trap Jasmine's better off argument. It worked until Jasmine responded with a challenge to Elicia's "lack of evidence". A pretty even debate mostly, although some judges, rightly so, thought Jasmine should have used a variety of documents to support her argument. Some rules were broken during this debate which can decide the outcome. The 13th/14th amendments, although excellent arguments used after the Civil War, are not permitted. In addition, inappropriate name calling is unsportsmanlike. You can call someone ignorant if they in fact are, or a lier if they are lying. But attacks against character is a different story. We will clarify decorum in the next debate session.

  2. This was a good debate. Both sides had strong points. They canceled each other off. But i was somewhat boring. But on both sides they were wrong but i highly recommend that they should speak with confidence.

  3. This was a very close debate. Both had good opening statements, but they could of done better in the cx. Jasmine W. had 3 main reasons but in her statement, I didn't hear her mention the third reason. She could of also used more than one statement. Elicia did a very good job but could of left the attcak word out. This debate was good and so close. Jazmine Babuch

  4. WOOOOO!!!! Elicia vs Jasmine Elicia was the stronger debater with the way she was getting in her opponents head she reminds me of The Undertaker the way she plays mind games Jasmine did make several strong points only thing I would suggest is she should have used more evidence Congratulations to Elicia

  5. This debate was not the best I think that most of the debate was hard to follow. I think that they knew what they where talking about but they did not know how to say it. Also they both could have had spoken up.

  6. I agree with Jade... I think the debate was a bit hard to follow. In my opinion, Elicia should have won because she trapped Jasmine in the cross examination, however she lost because of the decorum issue with the "moronic" comment.... not good ): Elicia really surprised me, I'd like to debate against her sometime :P Jasmine was great as well, just speak with more confidence! Good debate though.

  8. Elicia should have asked her questions more clearly and waited for them to be understood. They were great ones which left Jasmine speechless such as "Were the slaves in Africa inhumanely treated as well?" I'm not quite sure what Jasmine said in Elicia's CX. Some of the audience were saying that she was working against her own arguements.

  9. This debate was a good one too... I think both debaters could have done a lot better, Elicia really didn't know where she was going with the CX. But jasmine stated she had 3 reasons but i only heard two. Also i think because Elicia didn't know where she was trying to go with the whole Cx she got mad and tried to over power Jasmine, but at the same time Jasmine couldn't answer a simple question she was asking. BUt i think both did ok..
    Congrats Jasmine!!

  10. I think that this honestly wasn’t one of the best debates. I think that they were both very nervous and both are very normally quiet people, so to get up there and speak was kind of hard for them but they did a good job of it. I was a bit disappointed in jasmine because during elicia’s cross examination, jasmine gave in and agree to what Alicia was saying. I think that they both could of research one another person a lot better and could of provided alto more documents and more use of the textbook. Kudos to both of them for going up there and giving it their best. Congradulations jasmine

  15. They both did a good job, but i feel as though this debate was boring. They both are soft speakers so it was hard to hear

  17. I think this debate was a little bit weird because they both did ok but i think that elicia should haVE won.... she said wen my oppenet gets out of her moronic state of mind..... she never called jazzmin a moron

  18. I couldn't really follow what was going on. They were speaking softly and the things they were saying didn't really make sense to me because Jasmine agreed with Elicia at one part during the cross examination. But, they still tried hard and did a pretty good job, considering they're usually pretty quiet.

  19. Shaquille, I think you made some very sweet and sensitive comments. Both of you ladies need to slow down! Your debate went at warp speed and I had to put on my super sonic ear-sets to decode you words!! Good arguments. Ms. Gold
