The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Brian v. Jazzmon

Judges were nearly split on this one. Both students wrote excellent speeches. Jazzmon showed us today fantastic opening remarks about the history of the problem (slavery). Very impressive Jazzmon. Brian, in his systematic way, discussed in a matter-of-fact tone why slaver is absolutely necessary. It was close but the majority of judges were convinced that raping occurred and there for inhumane treatment cannot be denied. Those facts are still contested. A stronger rebuttal would have made the difference for Brian. Congratulations to both speakers for a entertaining and thought provoking debate.

  1. Congratulations to Jazzmon on her successful win I liked the way she used background information to stump her opponent to Brian I just say you were saying umm... way to much it seemed like you couldn't answer the questions during cx also you kept repeating yourself over and over but atleast you tried good job Brian I admire your courage from Ralph

  3. In this debate both debaters had really good arguments and great things to porve. Many say that Brian should've won but i thing that Jazzmon deserved to win due to her presice arguments. I believe that the strongest argument which changed everyones mind is when Jazzmon stated her facts with him and his nieces. Overall i believe that this was a well said debate and absolutely fair!!!!!

  4. I think Brian should have won because he got Jazzmin on the cross examination when he asked her if she had any evidence that African slaves were rapped and she said "no".

  5. I want to take this time to congradulate Jazz on the win! Jazz, you used a point in the cross and I should have controlled you more. I don't ever want to be nasty so I let you go on. But when you brought the rape point out, i asked you if you had evidence to prove it, and you said no!

  6. Jazz you did good but I think that Brian should have won. But only for one reason because when you brought up the rape thing and Brian asked you if you had evidence to prove it and you just said no, if you at least tried to get around that then I would be on your side all the way. And Brain if you had just caught Jazz when she said something about race, you could have said that race didn't really exist back then, then you probably would have won.
