The Great Slavery Debate
Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Zarinah v. James
Three-Fifths. What does it mean? Are African Americans the same as a "whole" person? Do they deserve to get the same benefits as an American citizen? Zarinah effectively challenged this idea and connected it to her inhumane treatment argument. James delivered an excellent better off as slaves argument but should have defended the aims of the Revolutionary War being that he was part of it and Zarinah challegned him on this point. Congratulations to both speakers.

I thought Zarinah won this one. I thought the use of her person is the whole reason why she won. The contentions were strong and on point, so i figured they stood strong. Zarinah didnt attack his economy contention really well and James didn't attack Zarinah's Revolutionary war contention very well. James need to shouldnt have said he faught with the British, it made his person look bad. Zarinah needs to speak up more and be her normal self when speaking. James spoke clearly and gave eye contact in his speech. James cross-x was okay but to me it feels like he was saying " this is my corner" and didnt trap Zarinah like he should have. Zarinah handle herself well with questions and proved what she was trying to prove in her inhumane contention. I like how James gave pages from the evidence when he answered Zarinah asked questions. Over all I think Zarinah did slighty better since she used her person better, but they both did a great job!

This debate here was like the pre-entertainment show before the actually show. This debate here wasn't fast pace but it was exciting. Zarinah just kept on questioning James about the 3/5ths argument and James just couldn't get himself out of the hole. Then James gave a great better off as slaves argument even though he didn't actually state his argument which was confusing. Overall though this debate was pretty good to get back the class in the "Debate State of Mind" Good job by both speakers.

Ok this debate was such a great one that I was so thankful that I was able to be a judge of this heated debate. Zarinah was so into her person so was James. The thing that got me the most was that james did not give much eye-contact than zarinah. James was Benidect Around (or somthing) so zarinah should have attack that. All and Zarinah won but it was a great debate.
ReplyDeleteThese two debaters really surprised me. I didn't know they had it in them to deliver great speeches. I think that Zarinah gave a good inhumane treatment argument. She really backed her arguments with evidence. You can tell she did her research well. For some reason I really liked when she slaves are treated unfair, beaten, and rapped. Not everyone who delivered this argument gave this much detailed evidence. While listening two both speeches I learned new facts about slavery that I have never knew before. I learned form Zarinah argument that slaves had to got to the bathroom in the same room they slept in. I knew slaves conditons were bad but not that bad. Wow. I also like James arguments, although one was unclear. His argument about slaves making up the economy was excellent but he did keep saying that slaves make sterling which is almost true and that the sterling they made for their masters the masters ate. I concluded he thought sterling was food instead of money. That was funny. But even though he said the wrong thing the audience was able to kind of understand what he was talking about. Plus he had passion about what he was talking about. During the speahers rebuttals, they both struggled a little but was able to come back and state their main points. it was a hard decession to say who won because both debaters did a great job. If it were up to me they both should have won but when i comes down to making the decession you have to consider who had more eveidence and who didn't and thats were i think Zarinah won. Both speakers can learn from each other. Providing more evidence will get you a long way in a debate (James), and being able to project your voice and state your main points with passion is a *plus* (Zarinah.) I would love to see these debaters debate again and come even stronger than they already did. Good job guys.
