The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Paulette v. Alex

Are slaves property or do they have the right to choose? This theme came out in this debate today. Paulette quietly delivered her well researched and organized arguments. Alex did the same, although a little more evidence would have helped his cause. Cross examinations were a little short and both speakers could have used that time to critique the values driving each debater. What do they believe is right or wrong? Why? Do people really deserve the right to choose? Can people be property? Congratulations to Alex for proving to the judges that slaves are property.

  1. This was quite a debate. I thought that it was good but Alex and Paulette could of spoke louder so that we could all hear them better and their rebuttals could of been stronger to help tie up their whole debate. I thought that Alex had the floor and was the one to win. Jazmine Babuch

  2. I think this was a good debate, but both speakers could have spoken louder. I liked when Alex asked Paulette "Isn't happiness food, clothing, and shelter?" and Paulette said"yes". She could have defeated that argument or question by saying that, that is happiness but she can be happy without clothes on their backs or to white slave owners that might be happiness but African slaves were rapped and beaten to death. She could have provided this with evidence on page 23 in our documents.

  3. I believed from the beginning that Alex was going to win, just by his opening statement. Paulette did a great job as well with her opening statement, but died off a bit during the cross examination, allowing Alex to more or less persuade her to agree with him. Great debate overall, but there was lack of emotion & eye contact.

  4. I wasn't sure who was going to win until both debaters gave their opening statements and their cross examinations. Then, I could tell Alex was going to win. Paulette gave a good argument too, but she let up in the cross examination. They're both soft spoken people but they both had good arguments.

  5. This debate was very good, i believe that both debaters stated their arguments clearly and very thoughtfully. I think that Paulette shouldve won though because even if he stated it well..it doesnt mean that everything was fully right.

  6. This was a good debate too! I just wished they both would of spoke slowly. But for Alex, i wish he would talk clearly! To tell the truth, I couldnt understand what he was saying and i got confused and gave up! Other than that, it was a good debate!

  8. i think that both me n alex did a good job but alex couldve described the documents more and provide more evidence. On both of our rebuttals, we should have attacked each others arguments. When i was saying my speech, i think that i should have asked 4 a 30 sec. grace because i still had like 3 or 4 pages left and i could have at least got my point out or at least my last sentence.

  12. Both of them started out strong with their opening statements, but Paulette sort of died down in the CX. Alex should have more confidence, he sort of surprised me. Congratulations to both of you.

  17. This debate is a good example of showing off the strengths of people who normally give the impression that they are quiet. Some of the strongest people in life are quiet. Good job Alex and Paulette!
