The Great Slavery Debate
Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Nafis v. Shannon
This one wasn't even close. Nafis 3 arguments were logical and supported with evidence. Shannon, although did not deliver a strong opening statement, really tested Nafis's coolness during the cross examination. Is it really better to import whites since they are "superior"? Great question Shannon! In the end, both debaters dropped the ball during the rebuttal but it was Shannon who had the mountain to climb, not Nafis. Congratulations to both speakers!

I just wanted to say congrats to both debaters but Nafis really did come more prepared eventhough he had a few pauses he knew what he was doing Shannon was scrambling to find her material didn't cite anything as far as from the slave reader textbook she made no references to anything that could back up what she had to say while Nafis was skit scattin and bee boppin all over her with his references so congratulations to Nafis for a job well done I have observed Nafis working really hard the past few weeks to make his debate a success and I tip my hat to him from Ralph
ReplyDeleteI thought Shannon was going to win when she started CX Nafis she did a great jobs as asking Nafis why will he ask blacks to rebell with him if he said they where inferior but when she started reading her argument she wasn't prepare and she didn't even finish her argument and she didn't have enough evidence to backup what she was saying. i knew right there Nafis was the winner. good jobs to both of them they did a wonderful job.
ReplyDeleteIt was a very very confusing debate...I thought Shannon was going to win due to her cross examinations that she was giving because they were really powerful. I believe i heard her talking about the backbone of the economy and how that was really good. But it also turned out to be a shocking debate because Nafis won. Overall i believe that this was a very weird debate but good debate also!!!

I think Nafis did deserve to win because Shannon arguments weren't as great but she did great in the cross examination. At some point I did get lost during Shannon's cross examination Nafis.
ReplyDeleteThis was an awesome debate Nafis you did your thing. You were better than I thought. Shannon I just think that next time make sure that when you say your speech that you site your evidence more clearly. But you still got Nafis like...WOW!!!!!!!!!!
ReplyDeleteWOW i cant believe nafis actually won i thought shannon had this debate down and packed i was soo sure that she was gonna win. this debate was a good one and nafis gave it all he had like literally lol. all shannon has to do is get a little bit more evidence and shes good and maybe a little bit more organized. - ashley ortolano
ReplyDeletei think that this was the most suprising debate ever!!! usually in class nafis is quiet and doesn't do much and to be honest i figure that this was going to be a match that we were going to lose, but.... then nafis put his cards on the table and gave it his all, i was so shock and then so proud. he used his documents very well and did a good job cross-examining shannon. shannon did a beautiful job of keeping time correct and breaking down nafis arguments. cudos to both and i'm glad that they brought their best which is all that
ReplyDeleteNafis you got stuck when shannon was crossing you but congrats on your win. You should have provided more evidence and shannon you should have practiced what you wrote but good job!!
ReplyDeleteI think that nafis had a lot of evidence,i think shannon was unorganized but still had alot of important points.
ReplyDeleteThis debate was boring. I felt as though neither of them wanted to be debating. I thought that this debate shouldn't have been counted at all
ReplyDeleteNafis you used the whole 5 minutes and 30 second grace ,good job you spoke very good and showed us that you worked hard. Shannon you should be more organized .
ReplyDeleteTHIS DEBATE WAS TERRIBLE..... not the people cause nafis and shannon are both intelligent people but it jus looked like nobody wanted to be up ther but nafis just was more orginazed than shannon but its ight shannon
ReplyDeleteI can't Beleive i got put out of the class for this debate. i am so sorry to those who debated. I can't explan how sorry i feel.
ReplyDeleteNafis, great job. Shannon, you had the ability to match Nafis' arguments (as evidenced through your intelligent cross examination). However, you did not prepare for this debate. Ms. Gold
ReplyDeletei was really suprised about nafis. i thought he was going to do bad because he never really debated in class and when he did he didnt do a good job, but i think he did really good in this debate. and i think shannon did really well too.
ReplyDeleteWorst debate ever..Shannon you were good but you were unorganized and Nafice you just confused me
