The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Ruby v. Kayla

As Jeff pointed out, this debate was highly anticipated! It lived up to all our expectations. Kayla's training proved very useful during cross examination. Using the technique of asking "yes/no" questions, Ruby was backed into a corner which Kayla took advantage of during rebuttal. Both speakers had great speeches, however, one speaker was a little less organized because of not having a fully typed speech. Lots of "um" as she was trying to pull the pieces together. Bother speakers did fantastic during rebuttals and finally the class saw how it is done! I tip my hat to both speakers!

  1. These two girls were more than prepared for their debates. They were absoutely amazing presenting there arguments. I thougt that both two girls could have been more organized with there speeches but overall Kayla won becuase she came back in her rebuttal when Ruby attacked her in the cross examination. She stated that when everyone is born they are given "Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." She made her reasoning clear why slaves should have the equal rights as there masters. I commend her on that. Ruby was good with stating her arguement with alot of facts and she to me had more passion than Kayla did. she didn't want slavery to end because it would soon weaken the economy and that slavery was acceptable according to the Christian religion, and alot more that I couldn't quote. Both girls did a good job. I do think that the one thing that both girls could work on is being more prepared, well organized and to not loose there audience when preseting.Well done girls!!

  2. WOW!! What a debate?! Both may not have came well-perpared, but both deliviered a good debate when it came to the end. Kayla's rebuttal was the deciding factor between the two. One by One, Kayla knocked out each of Ruby points made, which ended this debate with Kayla winning. Great Job the two of you!

  3. This debate here was probably like the greatest debate of the 21st century and man was I ever happy watching these two students see who is more right then wrong. But they were both right because they both had outstanding arguments supported very well with evidence. During the CX, I was wondering if one of these debaters could find a hole in their opponents arguments. Then came the closing ceremony to the debate of the 21st century, the rebuttal. Their rebuttals was so outstanding, I wasn't even paying attention to the clock in classroom, wondering how much time is left in History class. Overall though great and outstanding work by both students who showed the class, how a Slavery Debate is supposed to be done.

  4. This debate was a pretty anticipated. It didn't live up to it's expectaciens ruby was not prepared her opening argument was good but she needed to think on her feet for the rebuttal. her cross was on point but kayla controlled her i both the crosses. Kayla's arguments were extremely good her argument about the revolutionary war was her strongest argument. kayla controlled ruby well and in the rebuttal destroyed ruby's opening and increased her own. there's was nothing i could have said that was not said in the debate. the judging was really anticipated but in the end Kayla took the win but Ruby was extremely close. good job to both debaters it was a good match the best in the class.

  5. This debate was anticipating.I didn't think that Ruby did her best. As I was watching the debate Ruby actually let Kalya back her into an corner wit the yes or no questions.I mean Kayla rebuttal was real strong she attacked her opponites arguments very well with the life, liberty, and prusit of happiness.

  8. Awww man this debate I wait for for the longest time. The debater(Kalya)vs. The essay writer(Ruby). Both had lots of information proves that they worked on this for a long time. Ruby stared off good, but Kalya destoryed her in the cross examination and when ruby cross examined her, she keep strong in what she said . This was a great debate I got everything I wanted in this debate and more.

  9. This is one of the best debates that I seen. Both debates was well prepared. I think that Brasof did a good job with pairing these two together. Both arguments were strong, and CX, so it all came down to the rebuttals. This was also one of the best rebuttals because they used their whole 4 minutes. At the end I think that Ruby should have won because I think that she was a little more organized than Kayla, aslo at the beginning Kayla voice was a little low, but at the end Kayla took the victory, good job.
