The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Charnique v. Asia

Charnique really impressed me today with her sound arguments and excellent cross examination. Asia deliver what is now considered the traditional backbone of the economy and better off as slaves arguments. They were good. However, we have heard them so much that opponents are finding it easy to rebut them. Will this be the way the rest of the debates go or will the next opponents bring something new to the table? Congratulations to both debaters.

    This was a really good debate. It was really good. Both, Charnique and Asia, were very good debaters. The cross examinations and opening statements were good. But, the main points could of been better because all of those points seemed so worned out. I really liked this debate. Jazmine Babuch

    This debate was most interesting. The debaters both stated their veiws really high and it made you want to agree with both of them. I think that the bible argument should'nt be used anymore due to the fact that it does contradict itself many times. Overall really interesting and fun debate!!!!!!

    This debate was fun. I was a little nervous. But I think we both did good, and I did disargee on when the judges said that controlled both CX because I took over her Cx by asking her question and she took over mines.
    And also, I asked Charnique a question and it wasn't answered. Overall I think it was a good debate.

    i loved the debate i believed that asia deserved to win. I believe that the best argument was that slavery was the backbone of the economy

    I believed Asia should have won because Sharnique contradicted herself when she said everyone have their own prospective of happiness. Her economy argument was weak because she only talk about people or places who depends on slavery for the economy without say how slavery damage the economy.

    This debate was good and it was used differently. This debate was not like all of the others because their were different points and the cross examination were good but they were both taken over. Good info to both of you!

    I beleive that Charniques arguments were all the best arguments she could give. Asia did a good job with her backbone of the economy argument.

    I loved this debate. Asia you did good with the cross examination and when you said that the europeans arent telling the africans what to do with the guns you supply them with. Charnique you did good also, in answering the questions durin asia's cross examination. Congrats Charnique
