The Great Slavery Debate
Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Kendal vs. Imyah
After the dust had settled from the Sarah vs. Stephanie debate, Kendal (Marie-Therese Metoyer) and Imyah (Elizabeth Freeman) stepped up as our next two competitors. Kendal started off with better off as slaves, slaves actualize the full potential of American farms, and African Americans ae the backbone of the economy has her three arguments. Imyah responded with two strong arguments that slavery was inconsistent with the tenants of Christianity and the Revolutionary War. During the cross examinations, Imyah attacked Kendal's economy argument, but ran out of time. On the other side, Kendal started to chip away at Imyah's Christianity argument, but she ended up giving Imyah and out which she took full advantage of. In the rebuttals, both debaters pointed out flaws in each others arguments. Kendal made a point by saying that the economy would fail without the use of slave labor, but didn't back up her cause. After everything was said, Imyah walked away the winner due to her use of documents to back up her arguments. Congratulations to both debaters.

this was a very good debate it was jusy very difficult to deside who should win that debate.i mean imayh had a great argument and a lil bit evidence to back it up and kendal her argument was really short but in the cross disscusion kendal ask imayh something about the 7 something i foget but imayh did not know and kendal told her what they were and she have not did that but that was the hardest debate but a really tough one also.

this was a good debate were briana using the knowledge and research of laurine's person but her in the strain to lose. both of there arguments were good to good that they cancelled each other out. i believe that laurine should have won because there was an elephant in the room but laurine rebuttal was better and strenghend her case will weakening brianas but still briana did a good job and at the end it was a 4-1 vote for briana i was the a presiding judje.

I think this was a very well done debate. I learned alot from both Imiah and Kendal. They had alot of aditude. from Elbert
ReplyDeletewow good debate. Kendall didnt show evidence as i thought she would but i just heard facts going on. if she would have brought out evidence then i think she could have won. Imyah wasnt ready but she was orginized and with good evidence. she just went a little fast
ReplyDeletethis was another debate i could not attend to but i heard it was pretty good. Congratulations to Imyah, she had awesome evidence, good voice, great support of her evidence and took kendall DOWN! Kendall i have heard didnt have more information, she didnt do as well on her rebutal but she did try her hardest. Great job you guys!
ReplyDeleteThis was one of the greatest debates that I have ever seen both debaters opening arguments was good but rebuttal Imyah gave Kendall that big push that made her fall and at the end of the debate Imyah took the win.
ReplyDeleteBoth of ya'll did great!! Seeing kendal and imyah as one of the smartest girls in period 3, I think that kendal was in the lead with her speech. As marie-metoyer, kendal had experiences as a slave, but said that she treated her slaves equally. Kendal was crushing imyah when she asked her about the seven sins, but gave it away and left imyah to strike her back in the cross. Imyah rebuttal helped her win. great job to both of you!!
