The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Aliyia v. Ashley

Incredible debate!  Both debaters came to the podium prepared with outstanding arguments.  Ashley was very creative in her approach to slavery and even created an argument never heard of in our class before-that slaves live as long if not longer (evidence can support this and can be countered).  In the end, Aliyia's killer CX got Ashley to see her own hypocracy and even agree that slaver masters were greedy!  Wow!!!  What a great example of what this class is capable of.

    This debate was wonderful. I do agree with the judges because in the CX Aliyia cought Ashley. Both arguments were strong and it was hard to choose between the two at first but, both debaters did really good for the first ones to go up there.

    This debate was the best today aliya and ashely both came with their speeches ready. all though i have to say aliya cx got ashely and made her agree. i also believe that aliyas rebuttal was outstanding. i think that if ashely would of came back with an great rebuttal her rebuttal was good but if she would stated that she didnt get to answer one of aliya question and said i have now have the answer to it she would of had an chance of winning.this debate was wonderful nice job you guys!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    It was indeed a great debate but I never thought Ashley would agree. I really think Aliya was trying to get into Ashley's head I know it got to me but I still think it was close

    Mhm, This was a very great debate, like Aliyah killedshe backed up everything and had very good evidence and ashley did a good job as well her arguments was very strong and when it came time for her Cx she sort of got confused but after all it was very interesting to watch & Good Job Guys :)

    this was a good debate but up also had its ups and downs like how aliyia came out strong with her rebuttal but ashley didnt but wat ashley did do as on the cx answering she answered the question easily and didnt show kno fear.....

    Aliya was very good. She put a lot of effort in to her arguments and was very passionate about her debate. Ashley also did very well but she needed to practice more on delevering her arguments. This was a very good debate.

    This debate was awesome have to say that they both did really well but some advice that i have is DO NOT LET YOUR OPPONENT CONFUSE YOU!!!! Confusion leads to lost of from of thought. So keep yall head up and stay focus.

    Both debators was great but i believe that Aliya was the one that show her arguments and came back with better evidence than ashley did so thats why i believe she won.!
