The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Brianna vs. William

Both debaters came to the podium prepared and this makes me all warm inside!  Brianna was able to crack William's armor today in the CX but didn't take advantage of it during the rebuttals   Brianna discussed in her argument that slaves rebel and then got William to admit that they discipline slaves so they "wont do it again".  Ding ding ding....they do act up again (rebel)!  Also, who handles the scientific argument better will also get an advantage.

    This debate was awesome i have to say i never seen a rebuttals likke William's he was listening to what Brianna was saying. Sorry to say but i'm totally using his rebuttal tecnique it was awesome it was another cx but better. Brianna did well with standing her ground and countering William.

    this was kind of a nice debate because they both had some good point of view and they also had some good (cx) but briana could of one this debate because she had opened william up during the (cx) but she didnt have a strong rebuttal to finish but great job today

    Lol I still don't understand how I won I practically set myself up to lose. I still believed Brianna did better than me but didn't the many chance that were given to her. I hope I get a good grade xP

    This was a very close call! Brianna and Willaim were equally strong, but Willaim seemed to attack Briannas arguments more than Brianna attacked his, although Brianna did support all her arguments and rebuttals with evidence, the desicion was beased on which arguments were still standing.

    I think this debate was really good and one of the closest ones we had so far. But William did do really good in his rebuttle. But brianna also did good with cx. But It was very entertaining to watch.

    this debate was really good. both sides had great arguments and evidence. willam really had a better rebuttle then Brianna but she still did well.
