The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Yusuf vs. Alia

This was a great debate to watch. Both speakers came well prepared with 3 strong arguments and paid attention to prior debates.  Finally, the abolishment side handled the Three-Fifths a person issue.  But what is surprising to me is how effectively the for slavery side is countering the inhumane treatment argument.  Really!? Abolish side you have to handle the argument that slaves are the happiest in the world, perhaps the most free.  Thank you Yusuf for moving the class forward in terms of how to handle the rebuttals.  Congratulations to both debaters for earning strong marks and making this debate enjoyable!

  1. yusuf is right because they treated them in a bad way; they worked hard. They didn't have bathrooms. They don't givethem good food. Africans worked hard, but not getting anything for their work. Slaves should be happy have the same rights. Aaliyah said slavery is important. Women do little word and men do the hard work.

  2. Wow,this was quite an exciting debate to watch. Yusuf began it with good arguments, not only that but he also interpreted his story into it. I really thought it made his essay stronger. Alia came out with an amazing 'Good Condition' argument, best one.

    It was a good debate!

  3. They both got strong arguments, and prepared well. The CX was great, yusuf was able to handle the 3/5 of a person. It was a great debate. Congratulations to both of them.

  4. i think adding his own story and attacking alia's arguments in the rebuttal made him win. but i like how alia actually used numbers in her backbone of economy arguments, which was smart and made me think she really out the time into really analyzing the data,

  5. This debate was very good. if i was to go after yusef id definatly take somethings from yusefs speech and include myself in my story it really helped in the long run i believe. Alia did pick what seemed to be a strong argument in the 3/5ths of a person argument(one that i used myself) but yusef did a good job in countering that in the CX
    great debate -mike young

  7. This debate was an interesting one, both debaters camee prepare with 3 strong arguments and they really provide their evidence. But during the CX, i really though yusuf lost because he had no questions for Alia, which proves to me that Yusuf agrees with everything Alia said. But after I heard the judge's opinions it change my perspective on the debate. Yusuf deserves his win and congratulations to both of them

  8. Great job Yusuf and Alia. Yusuf was the first person to use the cotton gin and I like that he took that bold risk. Alia had a good rebuttal but she could have made it a lot stronger if she attacked Yusuf's "slaves work harder" argument. Congratulations Yusuf.
P.S ...Thanks Yusuf for using my faith argument I was overjoyed! :)
