The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Brittany vs. Arianna

This was a fun debate.   Arianna came to the podium with 3 strong points and was able to overcome her nervousness.  Brittany, looking for blood, really hammered away at the discrimination argument during the CX.  Brittany also introduced a new argument to the class regarding the loss of jobs for whites due to slavery.   Brittany also asked an interesting question that was skipped over-why can't white people be slaves?

  1. I thought this was so funny! I loved how they had a lot of attitude. Lol. But anyways This could have been close if Brittany had enough evidence. Arianna came up very scared but ended up having the most evidence. But in my opinion they both had strong opening arguments.
