The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Talissa vs. Liam

Stepping up to the plate last minute, Liam took today's first win.  Liam tied science into the debate (no effective rebuttal yet), making his teacher quite proud, and did a stellar job during CX.  Talissa was ALMOST trapped in the corner with Liam's Adam and Eve questioning but managed to escape by challenging pro-slavery people to consider who can play god and how can't.  Congratulations to our senior, we will miss you!

  1. Totally loved this debate Liam used the Adam and Eve story and was able to manipulate to where it agreed with his argument. I have never heard anyone say that God was disciplining Adam and Eve when he kicked them out the garden!!! Liam that was a smart counter.

  2. I agree with Maria. Liam used a good way to manipulate his oppent. Although Talissa also debated well but Liam had a stronger rebuttal.

  3. I was so CRUSHED to see Talissa lose like that because it was obvious that she knew what she was talking about, but if only she had spent more time on the evidence than on the moral background. And that was a huge point and effective counter she made, that slave masters aren't god.

  5. this debate was kind of lump sided because liam won this debate easily but i alson think that if talissa would of supported most of her arguements that she could of had a shot a wining this debate......

  6. The Debate kinda turned in Liam's favor during the first part of the debate. But Talissa wasn't prepared but she did extremely well for someone unprepared. But any how it was a nice debate but Talissa let victory slip from her hands

  8. I think the debate was very good. It could of been a very close call if Talissa had more evidence. But I love how Liam had a really good Cx but he came back with a even stronger rebuttle. I am very proud of them both. (:
