The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Seth vs. Jonese

Sometimes hard work doesn't always pay off.  Work smarter, not harder.  This is what Jonese did.  She took full advantage of her strength, challenging her opponent during the CX.  Seth's arguments were very creative and thoughtful, however, one must really define life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness so that we know what that means for those enslaved and not enslaved.   I wonder, is it enough to say that you own soneone or do you need to prove that humans can be sold as property?  In the end, Jonese made example of the reality of social classes in society to prove that all are not equal.  She used that concept to challenge Seth's notion of equality.  We would not speak to the President the same way as our friend.  But, does that necessarily mean we would treat them less or a superior human?  Hmmm...maybe we do...

  1. Jonese did really well during the cx. She asked many good question and used the most of her time. Seth was more organize with his arguments and he clearly went through his arguments.

  2. Both did great but jonese you need to use more evidence from our documents. There were many that you could have used; for your argument about slaves are happy you could use pg. 10 of our pocket it could have helped. Seth opening argument was great your evidence was all over the place for me. Jonese your speech could have been more organized.

  3. Seth is right because all men are equal.Slaves are not happy. African men and women are treated in a bad way. Their masters don't care about them they bring slaves for work. They took slaves away from their home and sold them in american. Jonese said all men are not equal and that slaves were happy. They treated them in a good way. They give them good food. Young slaves were taught to write and read.

  4. My opinion was this was really a heated debate. Jonese tackled Seth around in the CX w/ really good questions. I think if Seth thought for a minute, and didn't say 'True' he could've found a way out of it. Once you say true, it's over. You agree & admit. And to be on the against slavery, we have to learn to not agree.

    Great debate.

  5. great debate.
jonese totally controlled the CX when she made him admit to every question she asked, and hammered the heck out of his argument. i just wished she would have became prepared with a speech, with more evidence to back up her arguments, all in all i think they both did good.

  6. I enjoyed the debate very much. Seth was well prepared and had evidence to back up his arguments, however,,jonesehad had total contol during the CX. Seth agreed to every question and statement she threw at him. They bothdid good. Congradulations Seth && Jonese!!!

  7. The debate was strong in some spots but jonese your speech was a bit lacking and couldve used more documents. But where jonese did shine was the Cross examineation. jonese's questions were really good and she definatly minipulated seth to get him to say what she wanted him to. Seth thats one thing i would definatly work on ur actual answers for the CX. but also work on your rebuddle as well it was good but could use more facts and documents to pound your points in.

  8. Both them was doing great job today. And I think Jonese can get more documents and evidence for her speech, and she was doing a great job during the CX,she ask a lot question that was making Seth confusing. And Seth was doing a great job today too,he has his strong arguement in his speech and both them was making a good rebuttal.Congradulations to both debater

  9. This was a very intresting debate seth came well prepared with a three interesting arguements but in the end his arguments were not strong enough to get through jonese's cx which was amazing because she used her time wisely and was in control. Even though jonese wasnt fully prepared she managed to think on her feet. I would like to gongradulate both debaters on a job well done.

  10. This was a very good debate to watch.First off ill start by saying that Jonese destroyed Seth in the CX. But i also liked Seth's arguments.he brought something new to the table and i got to hear arguments that i never heard.all in all it was a good debate. congrats to both participants

  11. great debate.
this debate surprised a whole lot out of me.
Even though Jonese didn't have her outline with her today, she still made her way around Seth. Jonese made her way through Seth during the CX, even though she cut him off after she got the answers she needed from him, i thought seth could have made his ways around. Also, i really like both of their rebuttals. They listed their points and everything, it was great. congrats.

  12. I think that this debate was a good one. Even though i wasn't as prepared as i could of been i thought on my feet. Seth's arguments were strong but he didn't know how to get around my questions during the CX. He agreed with all of them which made him look weaker but i think both of our rebuttals were strong.

  14. this was a very good debate.i was little worried about jonese speech because it was way to short however she made up for it in cx (very good)and her rebuttal. seth's speech was very well organized however when he asked for the 30sec i hoping he drop his second argument and go into his third one. this would have helped him gratefully.also seth rebuttal was in fact good but it did not up to jonese

  15. THnaks to all the people for the congartulations. I think that my opening arguments were well. I had three strong creative arguments ready. I used all of my time, but in my mind spoke too slow. I wasn't able to address all of my points, because evidence were too long. I also made an false statement saying that the D.O.I. was an law, when it was just a theory. Jonese's opening arguments were also well. She gave thre arguments. Although I think that she she had used alll of her time, and gave more evidence to support her arguments. Jonese's CX, SPEECHLESS!!!! It was that good. It was FANTASTIC, MIND-BLOWING, AWESOME!!!!! She got me to admit to almost every question she asked me. Once she got a good enough answer from me('true' or 'yes'), she cut me off and moved on to the next question. My CX on the other hand, was weak. I only asked a few questions and she either answered them or was able to get around them without admitting to any of them. Both of our rebuttals were good. We bothe re-instated our opening arguments with some supporting evidence. Three things that I couldwork one next time or if I could do over agian, would be to actually address all three of my arguments, not to make false statemenmts, and to not admit to every question in the CX. Jonese could improve on giving more evidence, comin prepared, and using all of her time. Overall I think Jonese did a very good job in this debate. She was able to quickly think on her feet. I think that and her CX got the win. Good jo Jonese, good debate, but an even better well deserved win!!!!!! Congrats to you!!!
