The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Taniyia vs. Sierra

Fun fun fun.  These two ladies have a lot of attitude and it showed today.  Their speeches were sound and Sierra delivered one of the best pro-slavery bible arguments I have ever heard!  It was also great to hear Dred Scott enter into the discussion today.  Taniyia thought on her feet and did a good job to defuse it though by saying that Africans do not have to follow court cases if they do not get the benefit of the law and that Europeans do not have to follow African laws while in Africa.  This argument works (to some extent) because of Africans being forcefully removed out of Africa as opposed to "choosing" to come to America and choosing to follow her laws.  Keep chipping away abolishment side on that one though.  Decorum (how you handle yourself up there) matters.  If you ask a question, let them answer it.  If you but in while the next question is being asked, it might be considered bad decorum.  Controlling with yes/no questions is good, but if your opponent is going to try to explain oneself, let them.   Congratulations to both debaters, you created quite a stir today in class, yet held a critical-thinking debate.

  2. WOW!!!!! WOW OH WOW!!!!!! Whoaaa, this was a good and spicy debate today!!!! I enjoyed it a lot, and was a pleasure to see in my mind two of the best debaters debate up there today. I htink that Sierrra had a wonderful Bible argument. She used the Bible well, using a lot of verses. She knows the Bible!!!! To that she also had that whites are the superior ones, and backbone of economy(i think). Taniyia though playing as Elizabeth Frremen she had three good arguments as well. She had inhumane treatment, econmicaly, blacks are the superior. Her CX was very good. Sierra had a good CX as well. Sierra was a little out of control. She made somne false statements about F.D. Taniyia caught her with it and attacked. She won that and the equality arguments. Very good debate, congratulations to both. It was a close one, but due to decorum Taniyia won. But, noit due to that it would be a tie, or in some respect in favor of Sierra.

  3. Both side had great agurments. Sierra took control and used her cx well. She also had a great bible agrument, and used many bible verse. In liked that Taniyia made it seem that blacks are the superior, and america depends on them.

  4. this was a very good debate.both debaters had an overwhelming amount of evidence.both debaters cx were good.the only thing that gave taniyiya the win however was sierra's demeanor during the debate.if she showed more respect i honestly would have scored this a tie.congrats to both sides

  5. This debate was very good, both sides had very good arguments and not only made it appealing to the ears but the documents were also very good. From hammering in old arguments that we've all heard before to using diffrent evidence for theis classic hard to beat arguments such as seira using fredrick duglas to enhance her own side which i havent seen done before. The cross examination is where decorum came into effect for me because i think seiara couldve been more polite to tinyia both in her questioning and when being questioned. both rebuddles were good but tinya had a good stradtegy where she saved some points for the end because you cant really defend it anymore and that was really smart. so i agree with the judges decision

  7. My favorite debate so far! They both did really good on their arguments. I like Sierra's bible argument, it was strong. I like the CX, it was so fun to watch. And I like Ta-Nayia's rebuttal. I think it was a tie. Congrats to both!

  8. Sorry this is going to be short because I don't feel while. I believe Sierra should have one because she used important court case, had tons of evidence and did very while in the CX even though is was aggressive. If memory is correct Ta-Nayia did the same in her CX so I don't see how Sierra lost. Also her rebuttal was amazing one of the greatest so far( I don't have the energy yo explain more) I'm very SORRY for nbot explaining.

  9. I think I did a good job, and i feel somewhat misunderstoob because when i aksed Ta-Niya a question she would answer and start to waste time by backing up her anwser. And it wasnt time for that. . . it was time for me to ask her questions! Not for her to rebuttle. I also think that my FD argument was misunderstood. I was trying to say that he benifited from slavery and that hes better off here. And he could be asked to stop learing b/c the owner has the right to do what he pleases with his property. I think i lost because i look mean and i talk loud lol. I dont think i was as bad as everyone makes me sound! I. . . I wish i looked nicer i guess lol. But Seriously sometime she was rambling about numbers and pages when all i wanted to know was "How slaves are equal to the enslaver" and with that question i feeli defeated her "Equaly Talented" Argument. . . Thanks everyone for the comments . (:

  10. This debate was awesome to me. Both delivered great evidence and I really liked Sierra's bible argument but during cx i got a little frustrated myself because Sierra did not let Taniyia answer that many questions. I was so surpirised that Taniyia won the debate but both debaters did a very excellent job

  11. I totally lovedd this debate! i loved sierra for having such confidence and great speech to come up there and debate! I thought she deserves the win, but base on the judges opinions.. I do get their point, but congrats to TaNiyia for winning you really did a wonderful job going up there against sierra

  12. This wasa very good debate. Sierra came to the table with strong arguments, using good evidence. Her only real downfall in the debate was she got kind of disrespectful. Taniyia came up with a somewhat similiar speech to her last debate, with much improvement. she used all of her time perfect. She remained respectful and won the debate. Grats to both debaters!

  13. This debate was very intriguing because of the attidtude that both of the girls showed. Ta-Niyia showed that shewas a very prepared debater, but Sierra killed her with her pro slavery bible argument. That might have been the best one yet. I think that Taniyia had a well deserved win. Yay for for abolishment.
