The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Charmira vs. Maria

Another student delivers 4 arguments?!  I loved this debate and the last one because the CX are so poignant.  That is, debaters are truly looking to find holes in their opponents arguments.  What I want everyone to consider as we move on is that these holes should expose weaknesses in arguments but it is still up to you to find evidence to counter.  Just saying someone is wrong is not enough.  Congratulations to both debaters!

  1. I thought it was just a tad bit weak that Maria hadn't really fixed her speech anymore than the last time I heard it, but both opponents were strong and I'm so proud of Mirmir for taking the win. Better luck next time Maria! >:D
