The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Leah vs. Shakira

She might be quiet during class, but I wouldn't want to debate Leah.  She not only creatively applied the Fourth Amendment, she was able to get to the roots of the evils of slavery--treatment.  Earlier comments to the class focused on getting the abolishment side to really step up their rhetoric and reasoning for why one would care if humans are treated poorly (consider that advocates for slavery didn't necessarily think that slaves were humans or deserve equal treatment)  Leah was able to punch this a hole in this today.  Shakira attempted to beat her opponent with strategy, not necessarily a horrible approach being that scoring could determine the debate.  She is the only student to every attempt to deliver 5 arguments but as we learned today, this might not be the most effective strategy.  2-3 strong arguments seem to still hold more weight over 4-5 less argued points.

  1. i liked thier arguments. they both shouldve spoken a little louder, and i liked how shakira tried to fit in 5 points. but i found out today that that isnt the best option. i liked Lia's points about harsh treatment.

  2. i like how they had their speech ready, and their confidence while debating each other. But i really thought they should use a bit more preparation for CX. Congrats to Leah for winning =]

  6. Looks like it was a great debate. I shouldn't miss it. But I think 5 argument are too much. It don't have enough time to talk about it. Congrats to both debater.

  7. wow, what a debate it was great. they both had a lot of evidence, i liked leah's arguments.
leah's 3 arguments were stronger than shakira's 5 arguments. and the rebuttal were okay.
i think both of you did good

  8. Leah expertly explained why it should matter if slaves were being treated inhumanly or not. She hammered in who decided if they were 'men' or not. (i.e DOI) This was genius and I think this is what made her have a well deserved win for the 'for abolishment' side. Shakira tried to deliver 5 arguments. If the allotted time was longer, she would have had a lot more time to make these arguments stronger, but she could not analyze any of them critically. I think this is where she took her fall in this debate. I was so intrigued during the whole debate, and as all others might realize, against slavery is coming up and we're gonna' knock you guys right out of the ballpark.

  9. I loved the way Leah used the Constitution in her rebuttal. Not only did she hammer the 8th amendment, she hammered the 4th amendment in an unusual way. If Shakira had only used 3 arguments with strong evidence she would have done a better job. There is no way a person can give 5 arguments with strong evidence in 5 minutes. Congrats Leah! We're tied up now!
