The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Katelin vs. Jackie

Wow! What an interesting second debate.  Flowing is the key when you are up to.  Katelin introduced the idea that if slaves were so happy then why did they rebel.  A stronger rebellion argument is hard to counter, yet possible.  Don't let your opponent off the hook so easily.  Congratulations to the first set of debaters today!

  1. this debate was kind of confussing because Jackie didnt really know what to say and she agreed that all men are created equal and she didnt have a good rebuttal. Katelin had good arguments and backed them up well.

  2. This debate was interresting to me just the face expressions of the two were kind of funny. They both looked like cherry heads up at the podium but they had some pretty good arguments. Katelin came at Jackie withb some intense questions during CX. Jackie had good arguments and was able to back them up this was our first step to looking at are GREAT DEBATES.

  3. This one was fun to watch because both opponents were equally confused/confusing. If Jackie had came up with support for her last argument, it would've been easier to say she won except for in her rebuttal when Kate got her to admit she contradicted herself, which she didn't (lol). But hey, at least now we know that if we don't know something, we should let confusion lead the way! ;D Stay strong girls and even though it's over, keep polishing your debate speeches
