The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Chelsea vs. Nina

It is lovely to watch friends debate.  Sometimes, this can be a barrier when CX. Nina tried to defend her arguments with the "we are disciplining our slaves" argument while Chelsea attacked with they are "not happy".  Chelsea had an advantage in this respect because she challenged the legitimacy of the document which stated they are happy and through questioning, was able to get Nina to see why the conditions were not so plentiful and great.  This class is getting better, keep it up!

But this debate was excellent. Both debaters had wonderful speeches. Nina asked good questions and Chelsea came back with ever better answers. Chelsea you did really good today with both CX's. Just remember to take advantage of the time you are given and take your time.

But this debate was interesting. i was in my little coner of the class and i kind of heard what was going on. I believe that both parties could have spoken louder. but they did have very good argument. Yeah Nina!!! (eventhough you didn't win)

  4. Chelsea, I was so upset that you didn't listen to me when I told you to use the dictionary. I knew you were going to win based on what strengths you had, but you could've CRUSHED Nina if your rebuttal was stronger. It was the best of times, it was the worst of times ~~Charles Dickens

  6. The fact of the matter is that even though Chelsea had more of a better CX, Nina still dould of had a chance of winning if she was prepared for any questions that got put on the table....

  9. I loved this debate even though it got confusing. But this debate was really funny and interesting because of the fact that they are best friends. But Chels u could crushed her if you attacked better and had a lil more evidence.
