The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Ruth vs. Maria

Getting better.... Both debaters came to the podium well prepared with killer opening statements.  Maria was able to strengthen her arguments during the CX with prepared questions.  She thought out what she would ask and it showed.  Hint: show up to the podium with prepared questions just in case you get stuck or really want to hammer in a point.  Maria did an outstanding job arguing the U.S. Constitution but the most important thing in my eyes that happened was the introduction of the contradiction known as Thomas Jefferson.

Remember, rebuttals are really important to knock out opponents arguments and stress what has happened during the debate.  If someone challenges your evidence, discuss in the rebuttal why you are right.

  1. todays debate maria vs ruth was very interesting. i believe that ruth should've won even tho her rebuttal was weak and she didn't tackle marias arguments which were slavery is supported by the constitution...and ... lol i cant remember anymore!!! anyway i think ruth shouldve won when she asked the killer question to maria which was:
if our economy is so scarily and is in need of money, then why are they buying slaves?

  2. This debate was something I thought would be very close. Which it was, but not as close as I anticipated. Both Maria and Ruth had awesome arguments and asked some great questions, but when it came to the rebuttal they just went downhill... Maria had a lot of Interesting and very controversial topics, while Ruth had some complex questions. Unfortunately, Ruth anticipated a loss on her part and chocked a lot causing her downfall. You both did awesome and this is a great example to set for the other debaters.

  3. Yes, I agree our rebuttals were terrible now I know and need to practice rebuttals. Everbody just remember to be specific in your rebuttal about you evidence and sources. My favorite question or I believe the only question was why do you need laborers why can't you do it yourself? This was a question I was expecting and a question I was well prepared for. But yes i walk out of class with my head up high because i was able to defeat two of her argument were she only touched one of mine!!!!! Ruth was awesome though she had a great speech I really thought i was debating a college student!!!!!

  5. Good Debate , Ruth's arguments were very strong and she could of had the chance at a win, but her rebuttal and Cx was weak at points. On the other hand Maria did a good job, she came strong and well prepared. Also, Ruth's question to Maria on why you are being slaves if your economy is in need of money, She could have one because Maria failed to answer that question. Overall this was a very great debate, Can't wait for the next ones to go !

  6. Even Though i'm on the same side as Ruth I believe she was weak on her Rebuttal and her CX and when it was Maria's turn, she stormed in and answered all her questions and in the end she had a higher chance of winning so thats why she did win.!

  7. This debate so far was the most close debate yet. They both had really good evidence and strong arguments. But the rebuttle could have been better. But Ruth could of had this if she attacked Maria back but she didn't so Maria took the win for the debate.
