The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Farid vs. Sally

This debate was a real pleasure to watch.  Farid brilliantly applied the Eighth Amendment to the abolishment side in which he recognized that slave masters assumed that slaves were property yet challenged the idea that you need to respect such property.  Sally refused to let Farid off the hook during the CX while Farid refused to give into the point that those whom are enslaved do not get the same opportunities as those who aren't enslaved.  Congratulations to both debaters for getting in front of the class and delivering solid speeches!

  1. Good job to both of you guys! I really liked when Farid handled the CX , the way that he answered the questions. I also like Farid's opening , its was good. Sally I liked your opening argument as well te way you used the arguments. Both of you had lots of evidence , so GREAT JOB !

  2. This debate was very wonderful, sally as well as farid explained in great detail why they thought slavery should and should not be abolished. During the CX farid handled himself very good. He answered each question with a clear and intelligent response. In the end sally's rebuttal was great , she restated each argument and attacked farid's arguments as well, she explained why slaves were not treated inhumanely and how they are not equal to the whites.

  4. Great job o the both of you. Both of you were on fire in the CX like when Sally ask "If all are equal why don' we have the same amount of money" That was the first time I had heard that question an if she would have restated that in a different way that could became a very useful question in the future. For Farid you would have taken the lead if you would have stated more evidence in the rebuttal and to attack Sally more with the religion argument. on a different note Farid your opening argument was top of line work, also you were very good at getting of Sally's CX question. Sally you won't speaking very loud in the start, but after a little while you being to talk louder which really helped you in the debate. That is the truth and the truth always in same way hurts.

  7. Thanks for all those comments. Farid did really good on his CX, he turned the 3/5 to 60% it was confusing me. So I was not able to anwser it, and he answer all my questions. But my rebuttal was little stronger than him, I used more evidence to attack his argument. So it was a close debate. Congrats to both of us!

  8. Great job to both debaters! I was not here.
But from the comments I see farid did really good in the Cx.
I wanna commend you on that because it's really hard
to get up there and be on top of your game with cx questions. I'm glad
    you didgood there.
Thats the major area our class needs to improve in.

  9. Both openings were good but farids felt like he was just reading aout of the packet the whole time, and it waqs kinda boring. farid handled himself very well in the cross examination. every question sally asked he just seemed to think for a second and give a very succinct yet meaningful answer. i also think farids rebuddle but it could be inproved by adding alittle more evidence and attacking sallys points. but overall it was a good debate
