The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

twizzler vs. roshonda

This was a great debate to watch on different levels. Both debaters were prepared and worked hard to overcome their fears.  I know this is cliche, but they are both winners.  Roshonda came strong with a scientific argument while Twizzler hit Roshonda with a rebellion argument tied into being treated unequally in America.  Attack don't just defend!

  1. The debate between me and roshonda was very scary to me. I was so nervous and scared i was so nervous that i couldnt think what to say for my cx and rebutal. i think roshanda did a great job with every thing. im happy that i won but i wish i could have handeled my rebutal and my cx and my speech better but because of my evidence i won

  2. i realy enjoyed watching this debate. For someone who hasn't been in African American class for a while, and get up to deliver a slavery speech was awsome. Roshonda did a good job trying to crack down Twizzeler's points during CX. Twizzler did a nice job on incorparating Haiti in her speed..to me that did it. Over all they both did good and congrats to twizzler && Roshonda!!

  3. i think Roshonda did much better this time around and i commend her on that. iWas surprised Tyonna talked about Hati, and i Was also surprised that Roshonda talked about the slaves being beat because they didn't eat, because they needed to be strong & healthy, and that they were beat for no reason to place fear in thier mind....iAlso didi this in my speech. Congrats to both debaters !

  4. it was a grate debate to sit there and watch in a shock to see twizzler perform like that was nice to see for being a starter just to getting to debate was well and roshonda to see a major improvment was good from her last debate both had a good opening argument and did well CX all so twizzler handly her self well during the rebuttla good job to both and congrtulation to them

  5. This was a debate and I believe Roshonda should have won. The way Judges made it sound was that Tyonna won because Shondy made a "mistake" in her bible argument ( same was said last time she read the speech). However isn't there a cross out rutein? Because Tyonna obviously said Hartiet T. experience the Middle Passage. IMO Roshonda won the CX because Tyonna gave untrue answers. Although in the end I'm happy Tyonna won because she tied up the game... which I'm lead to say good luck to FingTang.

  6. This was a great debate. Roshanda you need more evidence throughout your speech. You also need to practice making quick responses for the cx. Both of you need to use your time more wisely. Your rebuttals were very short and could have used each other's story more. Twizzler a lot evidence for someone who has recently got the information. Although you didn't finish your opening statement you still did great. Becaus eoyu didn't finish you should have finished in the rebuttal. You could have also used your 30 second grace to finsh your second statement. Both of you did a great job.

  7. It was a good debate. Tyonna has a lot of evidence. They both did well in the CX,but I think their rebuttal were too short. They should use the time to think. Congrats to both debaters.

  8. I thought this was an outstanding .. shocking debate. Roshanda had very good arguments along w/ Twizzler. In my opinon Twizzlers arguments were a bit better because it had rebellion in it. I believe she was the first to ever do it so greatly, and appropriate. Roshanda on the other hand, carefully held her head up high during CX.

    Great Job.
Tip: Rebuttals can be a bit better.

  9. This debate was great! They both had awesome argument but two problem did arised. First, when Tyonna said she, Harriet Tubman, was on the middle passage, when she was born in America. And when Roshanda, was using her bible argument and said Abraham Lincoln instead of Abraham.

  10. i liked how tyonna had a lot of edvintce in her argument hover when she said that she was on the slave ships i belive that was her bigist mess up and roshanda when she said that lincon was in the bible good debate over all

  11. I think this was a great debate, but little things took me out of it like abraham lincon and the dact that tyonna either didnt know she was'nt on a slave ship or was trying to make a point and didnt hammer it through. if these were fixed it wouldve just made this debate much more, not beliveable but just make it seem like both debaters knew their packets better. I think the Cx's were both alright and the rebuttal's lacking. this debate like i said was good but had the potential to be very good-mike young

  12. awesome debate, twizzler hasn't been in african american history class, but she did good in the debate.twizzler had a lot of evidence.
roshonda confused me when she was talking about the bible and said abraham lincoln instead Abraham. and roshonda you need more evidence.
i think twizzler, you didn't finish your argument you should finish it in the rebuttal.
both of you need to make your rebuttal more stronger. good job to both of you.
    and good luck to Fengting

  13. The debate is good. both arguments are good. Tyonnna was right. They treated inhuman. All men are equal. All men made of blood. Slaves treated not well. Roshonala said we are not equal. slaves are treated equally because they are animals. We do different jobs. Africans should not be able to read or write.

  14. This was a good debate. I tink what suprised me was the way Twizzler handled herself and the evidence she used. I think that she had 3 good opening arguments. She used her personal stories as Harriet Tubman well. She also used the Middle Passage to its fullest and used rebellion well enough too. I don't think no one els has gotten up there and used rebellion as well as she did. But one thing thatshe should had done, was to deliver all three of her points. In the 30 second grace she should had stopped her 2nd argument and went on to her third so that the judges could give a little taste of what it would be. Its okaythough Twizzler, iI did the same thing!!!!!! Roshonda I have to say did a very good job the second time around compared to the first time. I think that she gave 3 good welly supported arguments. Using the Mudsil Theory and the bible I believe. Roshonda in the CX asked Twizzler how is the Middle Passage related to slavery at all. Saying that they weren't feed because of the protection of themselves. But Twozzler kinda countered it saying that since wqe did all the work we should be the higher class then the whites in comparison to the Mudsil Thoery. The rebuttals, I won't say the they were bad or weak, just could've been better. The time could've been used a bit more effective then just a minute of the 4 you are given. But in the rebuttal, I htink that both debaters were moreso defending their own arguments, rather than attacking their opponents arguments. Both debaters the a wonderful job. Twizzler I commend you on geting up ther nervous in all plus not being used the information handed to you, and Roshonda I commend you to getting up there again ands making your speech even better and stronger from last time. Roshonda, really Abraham Lincoln was in the bible???????? Congratulations to both!!!!!! Now its down to the last debate, who will prevail and take the win. Abolishment, or against abolishment.........

  15. I Was really surprised by Tyonna's arguments. I really loved the way she used Haiti. She had the best equal argument so far. Both their rebuttals so weak but their arguments were great. Congrats Tyonna and Roshonda for going up there.
