The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Brian vs. Amanda

Taking advantage of after-school tutoring and judging opportunities, this competitive spirit gave Amanda the edge she needed to win this debate.  She delivered the strongest rebuttal in our class to date.  However, this is not to take away from the great speech Brian delivered.  He was the first to use the fact that blacks are not in the minority in certain key states which is very dangerous for the economy when they are not treated well.  He also gave an example of a rebellion that WAS successful in Haiti.  Brian needed to use more of the CX time to hammer away at Amanda's opening speech.  Amanda came to the podium with an overwhelming amount of evidence that connected directly to her argument.  This was a great debate to watch!  Congratulations to both debaters for a job well done!

  3. i just want to commend my opponent brian meagher for taking on the challenge of facing me. all the hype about how i was a great writer , and everything, he didn't seem intimidated. i love how he did catch me in the CX, i said "however if they weren't doing the labor, someone else would" i added this at last minute and didn't realize how i contradicted myself a little bit. but i mean, mistakes are mistakes. ne thing i should have done was use the tenth amendment to counter the 8th amendment, which i planned to do, just got caught up with nerves. Brian delivered great arguments, and i happy he brought his A-Game. I believe my arguments were very strong, had a lot of evidence, and i did great in the rebuttal, even though i was pausing to go to page numbers extra long, there was more i could have said to bring down brian's arguments. but i guess i was just nervous. I prepared a whole lot for this debate, i put my heart and soul into this and i think that's why i won. I just wanna say good job to brian because you gave me a challenge i needed.

  6. I think this debate was a wonderful example of using smart evidence! Brian and Mandy are really smart and their CX-ings were amazing. Amanda your evidence was so strong and their was so much of it! I agree with you winning. Brian you also provided good evidence, but you mmissed her Biblical Argument and kinda supported Mandy for a second... but you CX was very nice. Congrats too both of you!

  7. Awesome is an understatement, this was a splendid debate. Something that I really liked about this debate is that Amanda had truck load of evidence to support her arguments and that they didn't all come from the packet. In doing that she set this debate apart from most others. I think that Amanda could have better defended herself in the CX by rephasing the question and try to redirect it back at Brian and that would have made it clearer who won the debate. Brain if you had keeping questioning Amanda in the CX he would've taken an early lead. From there you could restatedyour arguments with new evidence and attack her arguments and he could've won. The only thing I disliked was that Amanda spoke a little to fast and she took to long to find her evidence sometime. Brian you were to LAX in the CX and that costed you the debate. Also Brian you rebuttal compare to Amanda's was so weak it hate you more then help you. That's the truth and the truth always in some way hates.

  8. This debate was overwhelming to watch. Amanda delivered an overwhelming amount of evidence, but Brian gained the dominance in his opening argument proving that if Africans were treated wrongly, the economy would surely fail. Amanda then gained the dominance during the rebuttal; maybe the best yet! I can't wait until my debate.! Courtney

  10. Brian and Amanda dished some good arguments. They both got stuck on questions in the CX, but Amanda's rebuttal was a lot stronger which caused her to win. I'm starting to see the advantage in going first. Congrats Amanda...PS. Both CXS could have been a lot stronger.

  13. i think this was a very good debate. Both sides were very good, but I do think that Amanda won. She had an overwhelming amount of evidence in her opening statement. Brians ex question was good too. He only had one question but it was really good

  14. Brian your opening argument wasn't clear to me. I got your three arguments but not all of your evidence. In the rebuttal you were saying that you needed slaves because they are the backbone of the economy which went against what you were fighting. came well prepared. Great job.
