The Great Slavery Debate

Should slavery be abolished? Students at Constitution High School debate the advantages and disadvantages of abolishing slavery from an antebellum 19th century perspective. Having students focus on the social, economic, cultural, and to some extent political nature of this debate, helps students understand the context of America's "peculiar institution", roadblocks African Americans needed to overcome in order to abolish slavery, as well as frame the upcoming 10th grade American history course. The purpose of this blog is to create a forum in which students can self-reflect and continue the process of peer-to-peer evaluation as they debate in class.

Kenny vs. David

I was really looking forward to this debate because David had spent so much time learning how to judge as a form of training and Kenny has always struck me as a thoughtful, prepared student.  Kenny almost nailed the "slavery is different here than elsewhere" argument.  He is the first to bring up that empires fell because of slavery.  Warn Americans that this is happening now and almost happened in the past with strong examples and the argument is complete.  Both of these gentleman were the first to enter the scientific evidence into the debate which I LOVED.  I was soooooooo waiting for this to happen because it is how we started our course.  I want more of this....

  2. I'm just gonna throw it out there that I gave Kenny the fallen empires idea lol. This was a good debate. Both (surprisingly) came prepared and ready to debate. Opening Arguments I'd give Kenny the win because he was sucessfully able to read his whole specch, where Fedunie on the other hand only finished 2 arguments. CX was also won by Kenny because IMO David was ignorant and didn't show respect for his opponent. David won the rebutal without a doubt. I believe that lead him to victory. Congradulations to Fududy on win.

  4. This was a good debate today. I think that both debaters had great opening arguments. David had a very, very good and well prepared speech. I think that he had three main good arguments and supported each of them with a substational amount of evidence. Kenny, had three good arguments as well. He also had supporting evidence too. He choose an creative argument in that slavery has been around for years, and is different in America. Slaves were treated as chattel, and that the empires feel due to it being in other places. Kenny's CX was okay. It had some holes and was weaker in comparison to David's. David had a good CX. He said that it don't matter about Christianity. Both rebuttals were exceptionally good. Both attacked on each others arguments. David incorporated his person in Roger Taney, in his involvement in the Dred Scott decision, saying that Afdrican slaves were not accounted by as citizens or humans. Therefore, the Constitution doesn't recall to them. Kenny, used little evidence, but used and put his own common two sense into his speech. David dids this also. Congrats to both debaters!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

bit to far to point that some might say he was being rude.kenny on the other hand made some rather good point . overall this was a great debate and i cant wait to see the next one

  7. I didnt know what to expect from these two but they were really good. they both had good opening argument, espesially fudunie's opening it seemed like it was very well prepared. The cross examination was a bit lacking, i felt like david was just yelling and trying to preasure kenny and he succeded but i dont belive that is the objective of the CX. the rebbudles werent anything over the top but overall it was a good debate

  9. David and Kenny's was awesome. David was very aggressive during the CX while other my say it was rude I think it's just his style of debating. The thing I liked the most is that David used use character's deeds to help him win the debate.

P.S: I won't be writing the catch phrase or my full name for a while.SORRY. :(

  11. it was a nice debate, they both had a lot of evidence, i liked how kenny was answering the questions, but i didn't like the way david was asking the questions. Both attacked on each others arguments, the rebuttals were okay.
i think its an interesting debate.
good job to both of you.

  12. Kenny had a really strong opening argument, but David used Dreadscott in his cross examination which, I believe helped him win. After David said Dreadscott, Kenny got stuck and could not find a way to counter it. Kenny stood his ground in the rebuttal, but in conclusion David won because of stronger arguments and evidence. Great job to both debaters.

  13. This was one of my favorite debates. Both arguments were strong and they was well prepared. I liked how they used Darwins theory and natural selection. I think that the CX could of been a little better. David never gave Kenny a chance to answer the questions. Every time Kenny went to answer David cut him off. In the end both of them did a good job and congrats David.

  14. I'm very proud of david for winning his debate, he prepare, and knows his arguments well. I loved how Kenny CX with david about the being treated equal and all. &also, i admired how he brought out that we're all the same animals. 15. Kenny great opening argument. David tried to over power your cx and was being rude to you. You had a lot of evidence and you used many resources. Your rebuttal was good, you repeated your arguments but it could have been longer. David you used you personal story in your debate which was very convincing. When you cx Kenny I believe you were being rude. In the cx you asked him about his argumant about slavery being around for centuries and if it was relavent; yes it was and it wasn't against your arguments it also was not the rebuttal. In your rebuttal you were really attacking kenny's arguments. I believe you could have made your point without attacking him so much. Otherwise great job to the both of you.
