Gabe vs. Rachel
This was a wonderful debate. Rachel's argument against abolishment has become one of my favorites of all time (minus the fact that she tried to deliver 4 points). Slave owners do not feed them well because they need to be working in the fields and can't be too strong to rebel. They are the inferior class of people and are meant to be in the fields. They are essential to the American economy as those workers. These are sound reasons. BUT, Gabe was able to do something not many students have been successful at-proving that the conditions are not better by arguing the actual benefits pro-slavery people say they get. This is excellent thinking! This debate was so close that this point became the deciding factor. I hope more debates are like this one today.

Both opening arguments were very good. Gabe was strong on his rebuttal. He had a lot of evidence. Rachel did well on the debate. She spoke too fast and I really didn't understand. Congrats to both.
ReplyDeletei had so much fun debating Gabe, and writing my speech. I believe my strongest point was the part about "united we stand, divided we fall" . but i liked gabbes point about the clothing. i kinda got stuck on that point. and i didnt completly understand the question he asked me in his cross examination about how indentured servitude was better than slavery or something like that. After the debate, Gabe explained to me what he meant in normal words and i understood exactly what he meant. But i commend Gabe on his win, and i had a lot of fun doing this. it was a great expierience and i enjoyed learning about things i never knew. like blacks had slaves. anyway. Congrats on your win, Gabe !
ReplyDeletei enjoyed the debate, i really liked rachal's argument a lot. Gabe had good evidence and did very well on his cross examination. congrats to Gab!!
ReplyDeleteI strongly believe that rachel won this debate for the following reasons, i believe that rachel's opening statement was very strong and she incoparated so much evidence as did gabe but I believe that her arguments were stronger. My second reason is that some of rachel's arguments were not attacked all the way. Gabe did try to attack some of her arguments but he did fully break them. In the cross examination, rachel took over in that category. She was asking all the right questions and got all the answers she needed. Gabe's CX towards rachel was sort of unclear in the beginning but became clear to me later on. In their rebuttal Gabe showed small evidence and only attacked one of rachel's arguments. But it clearly hammered it. Now rachel restated her arguments, and attacked Gabe's as well. I also believe that some of the judges critiques were one sided because i heard more things about rachel's flaws than how good she did. On the other hand Gabe had more credit than flaws .....which i believe was unfair because, both competitors had flaws and well as great and excellent points. For the most part besides the judging...this debate was great both students handled themselves very well. Congrats to Gabe on his win for Abolishing Slavery.
ReplyDeleteThis was an enjoyable debate. I enjoyed rachel speech because she put so much enthusiasim into her speech which made me understand her key points and what she was arguing. Both debaters were very organized and I could tell their key arguments right off the back. I also liked gabes argument during the cx about the slaves not being provided with good enough clothing to benefit them throughout the summer and winter. Rachel did well during the cx asking gabe many questions and her rebuttal was very strong to me . I thought that Rachel would win but congrats to both debaters and nice work.
ReplyDeleteI would like to thank everyone for there advice. I agree with Chris that I didn't completely break Rachel's arguments. Yes, I could have came stronger in my CX and rebuttal. But I disagree that the judges pointed out Rachel's flaws more than mine, since Brasof had given Rachel more positive feedback then me. I honestly thought that Rachel was going to win the debate, since I felt as if I had froze in the CX and gave up a little in the rebuttal. In the end I started to feel more confident in myself since I had worked hard and realized how anything could happen. Overall It was a good experience debating my friend Rachel. Congratulations to everyone!

ReplyDeleteOkay, so this was yet another fisty good debate. To Chris, I was one of the judges. Me personally I didn’t see flaws, or at least as many flaws as you are saying. I was quiet and speechless as to how good this debate really was and turned out to be. Both debaters set themselves up to win, it was tight and heartbreaking either way. I had never made such a more hard difficult decision this far in debates. I think that Rachel had a better opening argument then Gabe. She gave 4 good reasons why. Even tough it was really three, and I commend Rachel, cause no one else has et to do that before hand. She had tons of evidence as showed a lot of confidence and sassiness in her talk. She incorporated her character very well throughout the debate. Gabe also showed some confidence as well. This showing me as a judge how good and close this debate would truly be. The CX, I believed went to Rachel. She asked all very well thought out questions and got good enough answers from Gabe. Gabe got around them, but just to a certain extent. Once he answered the question well enough for Rachel, she moved on to the next question. I think that the rebuttals could had better. Both debaters re-stated their arguments and attacked each other arguments also in the process. I don't remember clearly enough, but I think they each had one argument left. Gabe's inhumane treatment argument was very strong. The best I think I've seen so far. Now yes Gabe could had attacked Rachel's arguments, but he did a good enough job expressing one argument with evidence. But, both debaters did a excellent job debating. I commend both you. Both came prepared and ready to debate today. Both stepped into their character’s shoes and told personal stories to even further more express their feelings to the situation. Congratulations again to both debaters. This couldn't be anymore fun to watch, or tougher to make a decision.
ReplyDeleteRachel your opening argument was great. You used a lot of good evidence. I liked how you put your person into your speech. And your person was a slave yet was also a slave owner, so it seems as though you were treated good as a slave. Your cx was good you asked GAbe a lot of questions. You didn't understand one of his questions but it was alright I didn't understand it either. Your rebuttal was good but it could have been longer. The argument about not being inhuman and you used the middle passage(the slave owners were afraid that the slaves would get too strong so they didn't feed them). Gabe you used a lot of evidence in your opening argument. I liked that you used the argument about being born with liberty, equality and freedom. Your rebuttal was good although it could have been longer. I also liked that you said we shouldn't be tittled as animals but the animals are the people who are beating the slaves and killing them.

was pretty simple but u didnt. that was a bit of a down fall on your part. however gabe i was really impressed with how well u handled your self so congrats to you both.
gabe and rachel did a really good job, i enjoyed their debate.
ReplyDeleterachel had alotta good evidence and strong opening arguement, i think rachel should've won because gabe didn't really make her arguements look that weak. plus rachel did four arguements which i liked. but gabe did a good job in cx. good job guys.
i like how rachel had four arguments that were really good. she had a little bit of evidence for each one, but if i was her i would have put more evidence. also, i like how gabe Cx her, he told her 2 pairs of clothes is not enough, i liked that. although gabe had some good points, i just think rachels were better, and that she should've won. the reason i voted for gabe is because of CX. but both rebuttals were not up to par, they just stated opinions with no evidence, and didnt really attack each other's arguments. good job to both debaters, for this was a good debate to watch :)
ReplyDeleteoverall it was a good debate congratulation to both debaters, both had a strong opening introduction but i think gabe handly the CX well even if rachel dident understand his question so as rachel you guys handly your self well during the rebuttual but gabe took it home congratulation
ReplyDeleteIt was a good debate between them and i enjoyed there debate alot they had alot of evidence in there debates and in there rebutals. And congradulations to both for doing a good job.
